In Los Angeles County, about 1.5 million people receive CalFresh benefits, California’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), while another 320,000 are eligible but aren’t enrolled, according to the latest available data.
Stricter eligibility requirements and changes to how SNAP benefits are provided took effect Oct. 1, adding to the challenges facing low-income families across the country.
As businesses and residents adjust to changes in CalFresh, community efforts like Koreatown’s Sijang, and markets like Pico Union’s With Love Market & Café, are doing their best to fill in the gap.
