Los Angeles nonprofit theater company @strindberglaboratory wants to revive the Westlake Theatre.

The icon of the neighborhood sits across the street from MacArthur Park, but has sat vacant for decades.

The group is floating the idea to renovate the theater, which was built in 1926, and transform the vacant building into a community hub. They are seeking input from community members as they explore the project.

In recent years, the front of the theater has been used by swap meet vendors.

Strindberg Laboratory founder Michael Bierman estimates acquiring and restoring the theater will cost between $6 - $8 million.

There have been no formal offers to purchase the space and no major funding has been raised.

Walter Soto and Julia Silva have been on a decades-long journey to find a permanent home for their acclaimed flour tortilla asadero, @elrusola.

They have shut down for periods of time or switched to private catering. When cash has been a serious issue, they sold their kitchen appliances, their street carts and even their taco trucks. They’ve bounced around from Sinaloa to Tijuana to Sonora to Boyle Heights to Echo Park to Silver Lake, back to Echo Park. But this week, like Odysseus returning to Ithaca, El Ruso has finally found a home, opening its first-ever brick-and-mortar restaurant in Studio City.

Since the Lineage fire, residents have suffered through thick smoke and putrid odors. Now, they must also navigate how to respond to a surge of flyers and ads from attorneys outside their homes and following them online.

Oscar Espino-Padron, an attorney with the nonprofit environmental law firm Earthjustice, said the public should be cautious of “disaster vultures,” looking to exploit those who had to relocate or who have experienced negative health conditions after the fire.

Here is some guidance if you’re considering a legal case. ➡️

After a four-hour public hearing on Thursday, LA zoning administrator Jonathan Hershey pushed back his decision on the fate of the Murphy oil drill site in Jefferson Park.

Hershey is giving at least two more months for public comments and rebuttals from the site’s operator, E&B Natural Resources. Meanwhile, Hershey warned that his decision could take time, asking meeting attendees on Thursday to “please be patient.”

Local activists have been trying to get the site shut down for more than a decade, saying the drilling pumps toxic fumes into the neighborhood.
