Winnie’s story has roots right here in Canada. The real Winnie was a black bear from Northern Ontario who was adopted by Winnipeg veterinarian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn during the First World War. The name “Winnie” came from Winnipeg, the city Colebourn called home.
Colebourn later donated Winnie to the London Zoo, where she became a favourite of a young Christopher Robin Milne. His love for the bear inspired his father, A.A. Milne, to create the stories we know and love today.
🍯 Here at Assiniboine Park, you can discover more of this incredible story at the Pooh Gallery at the Pavilion. Explore artifacts celebrating the real bear and the story behind the beloved character.
While you’re visiting, stop by the Nature Playground to see the statue of Lieutenant Harry Colebourn and Winnie the Bear!

🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯🍯 Brilliant! If you like Winnie the Pooh, you’ll like my online shop with an AA Milne signed book with a hand written poem, EH Shepard (illustrator) signed books, drawings and watercolours. Shepard designed and drew the original Winnie the Pooh characters in the 1920s. I even have some Disney Winnie the Pooh art. Link in bio and find the Winnie the Pooh section…. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

An extraordinary story of how he came to be. When travelling, I always share Winnie is named after Winnipeg. It’s amazing how many people are unaware of this. So proud to share this fact! Cheers to 100 years!!!
