It’s a beary special day! 🐻🍯 Today marks 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh, the beloved children’s classic first published by A.A. Milne and brought to life by illustrator E.H. Shepard in 1926.

Winnie’s story has roots right here in Canada. The real Winnie was a black bear from Northern Ontario who was adopted by Winnipeg veterinarian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn during the First World War. The name “Winnie” came from Winnipeg, the city Colebourn called home.

Colebourn later donated Winnie to the London Zoo, where she became a favourite of a young Christopher Robin Milne. His love for the bear inspired his father, A.A. Milne, to create the stories we know and love today.

🍯 Here at Assiniboine Park, you can discover more of this incredible story at the Pooh Gallery at the Pavilion. Explore artifacts celebrating the real bear and the story behind the beloved character.

While you’re visiting, stop by the Nature Playground to see the statue of Lieutenant Harry Colebourn and Winnie the Bear! by @assiniboine_park

Every year, thousands of migratory birds pass through Winnipeg on their journeys between the breeding and the wintering grounds.

Some will just pass through Winnipeg, but others stay for the summer to raise their young right here in Assiniboine Park. 🐣

For World Migratory Bird Day, we’re looking at this year's bird conservation work in the Park, from nest boxes to fledglings to the thousands of dots installed on windows to help prevent bird collisions. 🪺

Here’s what this year looked like by the numbers. ➡️ by @assiniboine_park

Back in August, our Conservation and Research team joined partners at the Living Prairie Museum and here at the Park, as part of a national research project led by Environment and Climate Change Canada to safely capture, tag, and release monarch butterflies to track their migration south.

After travelling over 2,300 kilometres in just 40 days, we’re excited to share that our first tagged monarch, MB26011, has crossed the border into Mexico! 🎉🇲🇽

Data collected from MB26011 and the other tagged monarchs will help us better understand their migration patterns, pinch points in their travels, and which areas we can protect to support future migration seasons to come.

Follow the journey of the rest of our tagged butterflies through the Project Monarch app! Look for the monarchs tagged by our team, labelled MB26. 🦋 by @assiniboine_park

Meet Megan, part of our Horticulture team in the Heart of the Park. 🌱 We asked her to snap some photos this past season and answer a few questions.

What is your favourite thing about gardening in the Park?☀️

It’s been really fantastic to be working outside. I have loved watching the gardens grow and bloom over the last few months, and I’ve never received more compliments about my job! People really seem to appreciate the effort we put in and I’m proud of that too.

What is your favourite plant? 🌸

This may not too exciting but I’ve been obsessed with the pink salvia we planted because it has the most entrancing scent! None of the other colours or varieties have it, and I only figured that out by taking the time to stop and smell each one. It’s like that old saying. ☺️

Gardening tip:🪻

Try something new! Plant something you’ve never had before, change up a colour scheme or pattern, and dont forget to add some native pollinator plants for our small garden friends. When the growing season is short, you should take advantage and let some creativity come through.
