From October 7–9, our Grade 10 students embarked on an outdoor education adventure at Pacheedaht Campground in Port Renfrew, marking an exciting milestone in the development of QMS’s internal outdoor education program.
Over three days, students set up camp, shared meals, explored the intertidal ecosystems of Botanical Beach and hiked the rugged Juan de Fuca coastline. Along the way, they practiced independence, teamwork and resilience while strengthening their connections with one another and the natural world.
The adventure brought an unexpected challenge on the final night, when a powerful coastal storm swept through the campground. With wind and rain threatening their tents, some students found themselves awake in the darkness, holding down tent poles to keep their shelters standing. By morning, sunshine returned, along with a renewed appreciation for the experience.
These moments are what make outdoor education so meaningful. When things do not go as planned, students discover their capacity to adapt, persevere and support one another.
This inaugural trip laid an exciting foundation for future Grade 10 adventures, providing opportunities to build confidence, deepen relationships and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We look forward to growing this meaningful part of the QMS experience.
