“My kid just isn’t aggressive enough.”

I hear this concern from parents in youth sports all the time.

But here’s something worth considering: What looks like a lack of aggression on the field or court isn’t always a lack of desire, toughness, or confidence.

Sometimes, there’s more happening beneath the surface.

🧠 A young athlete may be afraid of making a mistake.

🧠 They may be overthinking instead of reacting instinctively.

🧠 They may be worried about disappointing their coach or parents.

🧠 Their brain may be prioritizing avoiding a mistake over taking action.

When an athlete is focused on not messing up, their attention shifts away from reading the game, trusting their instincts, and committing to the next play.

And the more they hesitate, the harder it can become to play freely.

The solution isn’t always to tell them to “be more aggressive.”

Sometimes, it’s helping them feel confident enough to act, trust their decisions, and stop playing afraid.

Because playing aggressively isn’t just about wanting it more. It’s also about learning to trust yourself under pressure.

That’s where the mental side of performance matters.
