The best thing I can do for my family isn’t work harder.
It’s show up whole.
Not the version of me that’s already been through three meetings, a difficult conversation, and a problem I haven’t solved yet. Not the version that’s physically present but mentally still at the office. The version that actually walked through the door.
That version requires something most entrepreneurs resist — sacrifice. Not the kind of sacrifice we talk about easily, the grind-it-out, sleep-when-you’re-dead kind. The harder kind. The kind where you deliberately leave something on the table at work so you have something left to bring home.
You close the laptop. You silence the notifications. You let the unfinished thing stay unfinished until tomorrow.
I write about this in Still Standing — the idea that the business will always have one more thing. One more fire. One more decision that only you can make. And if you let it, it will take everything you have and ask for more.
Learning to say “that’s enough for today” is not weakness. It is one of the most disciplined decisions a business owner can make. Because the people waiting for you at home didn’t sign up to receive your leftovers. They deserve the version of you that chose them — deliberately, daily, even when the business made it inconvenient.
That choice is the business strategy nobody talks about. Because the person you are at home is the same person who walks into the office the next morning. And the more whole that person is — rested, present, connected to something bigger than the revenue numbers — the better every decision they make will be.
Take care of your family by taking care of yourself. And take care of yourself by being intentional about when the workday ends.
The business will be there tomorrow.
So will they — if you show up for them today.
