Soil remediation is scheduled to start this week at the West Oakland BART parking lot!

Trucks will dig up and haul away hundreds of truckloads of toxic soil to landfills.

Soil remediation isn’t inherently dangerous–but if you see or smell something fishy, like dirt getting tracked out onto the street or drifting in the air, you can make a report to the @bayareaairdistrict .

You can make a report by phone or online:

📱 800 334 6367
💻 http://baaqmd.gov/complaints

When you report, be sure to note the date, time, location, and exactly what you’re seeing and smelling. Community oversight keeps us all safer!

After contaminated soil is removed, developers will start construction on 240 affordable homes. See the plan at @mandela_station_development or mandelastation.com

All the money in the world for war and genocide but not for free parking and free public transportation

Insane that BART parking here is currently 18 dollars. Disgusting putrid greed that needs to be addressed ASAP.

We have plenty of empty housing that people could actually want to live in if it was developed for habitation and not zero interest loan cons. I lived at 23rd and MLK next to the tracks on Northgate and nobody lives on the BART tracks unless they have to. It's truly insane they thought 400+ people will pay market rate to live in a BART station next to a freeway, a port, and a sewage plant.

It’s so exciting to see parking disappear and new homes rise ❤️

Well, I guess the days of free parking at West Oakland BART are officially over. So much for my 6 minute ride to EMB.

Cute fear mongering over a heavily overseen, already-approved remediation work plan… I’m genuinely glad people are paying attention to contaminated sites in West Oakland. But if you want to put public pressure somewhere, I’d be much more interested in the many contaminated sites that don’t yet have an approved cleanup plan than the one that already has a reviewed remedy, monitoring requirements, and regulators overseeing implementation. The last thing highly trained remediation specialists need is an uninformed public breathing down their neck and potentially slowing the removal of toxic material that should have been dealt with decades ago. GeoTracker and EnviroStor are great tools if you want to find sites to focus on. Find the sites that actually need public pressure. There are plenty where community attention could genuinely move the needle…

People use west oakland bart because there is parking. Do we need housing? Or…. Living wages?

This is dangerous. Of course dust is going to affect the neighborhood. West Oakland has the highest asthma cases.

I was heart broken to realize that there’s no way to park at West Oakland now. The spaces fill up so fast and crowd into the streets. I used to always park there and BART/skate wherever I needed and wanted to go after but now I have to shift to Fruitvale which doesn’t service all the lines. :( There’s so many unused lots I feel like they could’ve picked a better option than taking away the cheap and easy parking options for people that actually want to use the public transit system.

I was so sad when I pulled up to the West Oakland station and saw this construction happening, half of the parking spaces are now gone, lake Merritt parking lot is gone. Closest station now that has parking is Fruitvale, and they have a multilevel parking lot, but people constantly break into cars and steal things there (literally happened to me last year.)

@williewaldwell It's all more of the same old BS. Developers out to make more money at the expense of everyone else.

I would wear a mask if I have to get on BART at this station, and ideally local residents would get air purifiers. While I appreciate the precautions, there's no way zero toxic soil won't get in the air.
