Greetings from the Old Rectory, where the autumn sunlight has cast a golden glow over the garden and meadows today, so that the natural colours of the landscape seemed bright as a painter’s palette, until the gathering dusk of an afternoon twilight.
Meanwhile, I’m feeling relieved to have finished two writing deadlines - in between several restorative walks with Juno - and I celebrated by baking a sticky gingerbread, in anticipation of the beloved family arriving tomorrow. I always follow an excellent recipe from @nigellalawson - returning to my well-thumbed copy of her brilliant book, “How to be a Domestic Goddess” - but my only variation is to add organic blackstrap molasses instead of golden syrup and black treacle (I substitute a 350g jar of molasses for Nigella’s suggested 200g of black treacle and 200g of golden syrup). I also add double the amount of chopped fresh ginger - four teaspoons instead of two - and stir in a teaspoon of powdered ginger, as well as the ground cinnamon.
Meanwhile, I’m reheating Monday’s venison casserole for our supper, with the addition of some sliced mushrooms - and then we’re going to watch another episode of the new season of “Lupin” on Netflix (which is so good). Happy Wednesday, everyone, and I’m sending warm wishes, as always, and waving from the Waveney Valley…
