I have no basis for this, but I wonder if calling it “zionism is racist” rather than “zionism is racism” would have changed people’s reactions. Because at least to me, the is in “zionism is racism” most obviously reads as an is of identity rather than an is of description and whilst the material manifestation of zionism has been indisputably racist, there is more to zionism than just the racism imo and it’s certainly not the case that racism is zionism which an is of identity would imply

I would argue that the creation of a Jewish State was never about protecting Jews, not only from the basis that it was established on the writings of a fantasist who fancied the idea of crowning himself King of the Jews but also that it was clear from the onset it was never going to accommodate all Jews in the diaspora, even if it hadn't been widely spurned by more groups than it had been championed, with Dr Chaim Weizmann, first President of Israel, istating in a newspaper article 1930/40s " we want only the best of Jewish youth to come to us. We want only people of education to enter Palestine for the purpose of increasing culture. The other Jews will have to stay where they are and face whatever fate awaits them. These millions of Jews are dust on the wheels of history and may have to be blown away. We don't want our Tel Aviv to become another low grade ghetto" I would also argue that time seem to have erased the fact that there has always been *huge* objection to Zionism in all it forms from back in the 1900s when even Birnbaum, who initially championed the vision of Zionism that meant integrating with the indigenous population, he himself became antiZionist as soon as the "extremist strand prevailed" as Hannah Arendt put it in Reconsidering Zionism in 1944, or that it was becoming clear that the project depended on "Terrorist organisations built up from our own ranks" as Albert Einstein put it in 1930, or as soon as the "Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and the misrepresentation are the means, and a ‘Leader State’ is the goal” ws described by a prominent list of Jewish scholars in '48 after Plan Dalet was carried out in Deir Yassin.
