It's been a while since we've posted about Mohamed and his family. We are still sending them money every couple of weeks, and they are still dependent on our donations. Some people still send us donations regularly, but a lot of what we used to receive has tailed off, and that's why we are writing now. Mohamed and his family, including children and elders, are still living in a tent, still fighting to survive, still wondering how they are going to rebuild their lives when absolutely everything- their home, their businesses-have been destroyed. Here is a message Mohamed sent me last week, which we read at a rally here in Edinburgh " I want to tell you all something important. Don't believe that the war is over. I swear it's not over. It's only in the media that they say it is. Every day they kill us, and more martyrs fall. Life is still hard and hell here. I swear I feel like my life is over, but I have to fight for my family and myself. I know you support us and fight for us, and that's something I'm proud of. It gives me motivation and hope. Keep doing what you're doing. You are what's left of humanity. You are the meaning of humanity. I apologize for what I'm about to say, and I don't want to be a burden on anyone. We live here without a home or any basic necessities, and what you help us with and donate is what helps us get through and live this beautiful life. Keep donating and helping. I love you all." So excited to be back in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks and speaking at the @lighthousebks Radical Book Fair. I'll be speaking on a panel about Effective Activism Today, talking about the chapter I wrote for @yenta_laureate and @bobzecker s From Popular Front to Cold War, and thinking about what we can learn today from the interwar immigrant Communists of the International Workers Order. by @annsplaining
Over 100 Jewish members of the Green Party have written an open letter to the Party’s leadership and senior elected representatives, calling on them to stop weaponising antisemitism against the new Zionism is Racism policy. We are wholly united in opposing the accusations that this new policy is antisemitic. While the motion itself was careful to draw a clear line between Jewish identity and Zionist ideology, those who have attacked it have blurred the distinction. Zionism is not Judaism; conflating them is racist. We reaffirm our support for the current GPEW leadership and we urge them to stand firm in the face of mendacious attacks on the party and on the GPEW members who proposed and supported the ZiR motion. Now that Zionism is Racism is established policy, we call on GPEW leadership and elected representatives to work with it positively, moving forward with as much unity as possible. by @annsplaining

I was on Radio Five Live this morning as Communications Officer for @jewi.shgreens expressing support for @greenpartyzack and discussing differing Jewish reactions to the Zionism is Racism policy The picture is from a 1930 edition of the Yiddish Communist newspaper the Morgn Frayhayt, which I work with a lot in my research, showing a headline that reads "Der bankrot fun tsionizm!" - The Bankruptcy of Zionism! This is just your daily reminder that anti-Zionism is as much a part of Jewish history as Zionism is. by @annsplaining
PSA : We are in a covid wave. A lot of my pals are telling me they have colds or some other kind of lurgy, if this is you, it's worth taking a covid test. This isn't just so you can avoid spreading covid to others, but because if you have Covid and not a cold it is much more important to REST. While colds just hang out in our respiratory systems, Covid is a vascular disease that spreads to all our vital organs. Resting when sick is very important to prevent long term damage. It's also good communism. Signed, someone who learned all this the hard way cos covid gave me a heart murmur Stay well my dears xxx by @annsplaining

*A small sample of prayers from the Mayne Loshn cemetery prayer book* In Jewish Eastern Europe, the cemetery was a lively a place—a place where the souls of the dead remained connected to their graves, where they could be visited and even called on in times of need. Starting on Monday, I'm offering a new course with @workerscircle , looking at one of the most popular cemetery prayer books, the Mayne Loshn. Here is just a sample of some of the prayers in this incredible book, which, also includes elements of lamentations and incantations, and illustrates the very important role the dead continued to play in the lives of the living. The prayers are quite complex, but the course is open to anyone who can read Yiddish, as well as to more advanced speakers. Although these prayers were mostly associated with women and read in Yiddish rather than Hebrew, we will also take a look at the Hebrew prayers, and depending who joins the class, we may use break out rooms to divide up based on language ability and work on specific aspects of the book. Bkitser (Tl;dr), if you are interested, feel free to message me or just to sign up. It's going to be a lot of fun Meanwhile, especially if you are in London, stay tuned for some chances to study this material with me in English. by @annsplaining
