I first came across Andaleeb Wajid when The Henna Artist came out, and that was when I got to know about her work. Now, I am reading Have You Met Me?, a story about family, relationships, and the bond we share with our grandparents. The book revolves around Haleema Begum, a loving wife and mother of three daughters who live in different parts of the world. Her home in Mysore has always been a place where her grandchildren come together during their holidays. But after Nani's passing, the family reunites, bringing with them years of unresolved emotions and differences.
The story follows three cousins, Safina, Nura, and Rayhaan, who were once very close but have gradually drifted apart as they grew up. While their mothers deal with their grief and family matters, the cousins discover Nani's journals and begin uncovering stories and secrets they never knew about their family. As they read through her writings, they find a shared purpose in protecting her home and legacy. Told through three different perspectives, the book also gives us a glimpse into Nani's life, her thoughts, and the dreams she may have carried while raising her daughters.
What I found interesting about this book is the way it brings together three generations and their different experiences of love, loss, and family. As we grow older, we sometimes begin to understand the pain our mothers go through when they lose their own mothers, something we may not fully comprehend as children. The relationship we share with our nanis and the memories attached to their homes can hold a special place in our lives. Have You Met Me? is a comforting, easy read that touches upon these emotions without making the story too heavy. While some family dynamics may feel more familiar than others, the emotions surrounding loss, memories, and reconnecting with family are something many readers can relate to.
