Did we think changes were coming to the Companion Pass at some point? Yes, but not like this 💔
No real good news from the announcement today BUT if you still want to take advantage of this program for ONE more year, there’s hope.
Southwest Airlines did say that if you earn it through the end of the year, it’ll be good for next year.
However, if you’re strategy is to use the points from a credit card sign up bonus to count towards the points needed for a companion pass, then keep in mind the date of December 2, 2026.
Straight from their website: “any Cardmembers who are approved for a Rapid Rewards Credit Card on or before Dec. 2, 2026 and meet the requirements for the new Cardmember welcome bonus will have the opportunity to have those points count as Companion Pass qualifying points, even if the spend threshold is met in early 2027.”
And if all else fails, P I V O T ➡️ Find a new airline that works for your family. Work on a new strategy. There are still plenty of travel deals to be had!

SW has lost me and my family. There is no benefit to flying with them over anyone else.

If you could or do spend 140,000 on credit, why would you choose SW as your card? That’s a lot of money, spending, and there has to be better cards with way better benefits when spending at such a high level. Maybe a business that pays for business travel for their employees might hit these levels, but the pass wouldn’t benefit them much. Not really sure who’s spending that much, it would be easier and cheaper to book the cheapest 50 round trips from your main airport, from mine, 100 flights or 50 round trip flights for me would be just shy of 6,000 bucks, heck of a lot cheaper than 140,000, but a lot of wasted time. But could do the round trip over the course of a year and 4 hours in the airport once a week.

Southwest just closed the loophole. And if people wouldn’t go around and share all their hacks, the loophole would probably still be there. Sometimes the best deals are are not to be shared

Thanks for the pep talk! It was a tough blow, but last month my husband and I were diverted to a town in Romania that I had never heard of and suddenly I was planning a different trip than expected at 3 in the morning with jet lag. I am so good at pivoting and that was just the framing I needed! ❤️
