Did you know breast density can affect how clearly a mammogram shows breast cancer? 👀
Dense breasts have more fibrous and glandular tissue, which appears white on a mammogram. Many breast cancers also appear white, so they can be harder to spot against dense tissue.
Breast density is common. About half of women over 40 in the U.S. have it. Having dense breasts doesn’t mean you have cancer, and mammograms are still an important screening tool. But it’s useful information for understanding your screening options and overall breast cancer risk.
Here’s what to ask your care team:
* Do I have dense breasts?
* What does my mammogram results letter mean?
* Should my screening plan be tailored to my individual risk?
Your breast health is part of your whole health. Tia’s Whole Health Exam is a place to talk through your preventive care, including your screening plan, with a team that walks you through your results.
