🎀 Cute Composer Series: Halloween Season 🎃 Composers Who Spoke to God 🕯️🎶
Some composers didn't just write music. They said the music was given to them.
Hildegard of Bingen had visions from childhood that she described as "the living light" — a blazing presence she experienced fully awake 👁️ She was forbidden from sharing them until she was 42, when a heavenly voice commanded her to write them down. She became the first composer in Western history to be identifiable by name, and her music — long soaring melismas unlike anything else of her time — sounds like it came from somewhere else entirely. She also wrote the first known morality play, the first medical encyclopedia written by a woman, and had regular correspondence with emperors and popes 👑
John Tavener converted to Russian Orthodox Christianity and spent his career trying to write music as a form of direct prayer 🕯️ His Song for Athene was played at Princess Diana's funeral in Westminster Abbey in 1997. He believed music was a direct conduit to the divine and said: "I want my music to be a reflection of Paradise." He died in 2013 with his final work, a Requiem, not yet complete — dedicated to the victims of all wars 🕊️
