Things ❌NOT❌ to write in music or you’ll have no friends 💀 Here’s why: 👇🏻

🎶Flute: When writing for the flute, especially in its super-high range, remember: those notes require a LOT of air to play. This makes it almost impossible to play softly or subtly. Instead of something sweet and lyrical, you’ll often end up with a sound that’s piercing and dramatic. Use it sparingly—it’s more “wow” than “whisper.”

🎶Tuba: Tuba players are the unsung heroes of the bass line, providing the foundation for the entire ensemble. But here’s the thing: playing the same boring rhythm or note over and over is a recipe for frustration. Want to keep your tuba players happy? Add a little spice—throw in some rests, switch up the rhythm, and make their part more engaging. The audience might not notice, but your tuba player will thank you.

🎶Singer: Big jumps between notes? Nope. Singers excel with melodies that move step by step, not with wild leaps like a piano might play. And tricky, overly complex rhythms? Also not their favorite. Vocal music is about melody and emotion, not percussion. Keep it smooth and singable! 🎤

🎶Percussion: Marking something at 6 fortes (FFFFFF)? That’s just overkill. 🥁 Also, don’t waste time writing instructions for things that are obvious, like “don’t flip the cymbals.” Keep your notes clear and necessary, but don’t micromanage—they know what they’re doing!

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments and suggestions in the last post, which gave me ideas to create a few more of the “Make Musician Mad” reels (Part 3 coming soon! Drop your request in the comment👇🏼)

🎀 Cute Composer Series: Halloween Season 🎃 The Strangest Deaths in Music History 😱🎶

There’s a legend about Charles-Valentin Alkan: he was crushed to death by his own bookshelf when reaching for his Torah from the top shelf 📚 The truth: he was found dead under a coat rack in his kitchen — still strange 💀 Either way, Alkan was one of the most brilliant and bizarre pianists who ever lived — Liszt said he had the greatest technique of anyone alive, yet he spent decades in voluntary reclusion, refusing to perform publicly, writing piano music so technically extreme it was considered almost unplayable. He composed a Funeral March for a Dead Parrot 🦜 He was buried on April 1, 1888 — April Fools’ Day.

Anton Webern stepped outside his house after a family dinner in September 1945 to smoke a cigar — so as not to disturb his sleeping grandchildren 🚬 Then three shots were fired. He stumbled inside and died. The soldier who shot him was a US Army cook from North Carolina named Raymond Norwood Bell. Bell was overcome by remorse for the rest of his life and died of alcoholism in 1955. Webern was one of the most radical composers of the 20th century and he was killed by a freak accident, in peacetime, three months after WWII ended, for stepping outside to smoke a cigar (smoke at your own risk y’all!)

🎀 Cute Composer Series: Halloween Season 🎃 They Said These Two Sold Their Souls to the Devil 😈🎶

Legend has it, Robert Johnson met the Devil at a Mississippi crossroads at midnight, handed over his soul, and got the greatest blues guitar technique anyone had ever heard in exchange 😈 The truth was that he disappeared for a year, came back impossibly good, and people needed an explanation. Eric Clapton calls him “the most important blues singer that ever lived.” He died at 27, cause of death unknown. He wrote it all down in Hellhound on My Trail, Me and the Devil Blues, and Cross Road Blues — whether or not to believe the legend, he certainly leaned in 🎸

Niccolò Paganini was so impossibly good on the violin that his audiences genuinely believed he had made a deal with the devil 😈 Tall, gaunt, pale, dressed in black, with abnormally long fingers — probably a result of Marfan syndrome — he was called The Devil’s Violinist across Europe. The Church refused to bury him in consecrated ground for five years after his death because of the rumors. His embalmed corpse was moved from location to location, viewable by curious visitors, for years before the Church finally relented 💀

The Church refused to bury this devilishly good violinist 💀

Paganini was so good on violin that people said he’d made a deal with the devil. When he died in 1840 without last rites, the Bishop of Nice banned his burial, and his embalmed body was moved from place to place for decades.

That’s the Caprice No. 24 theme at the end, the tune BOTH Rachmaninoff and Brahms borrowed in their own composition.

Would you make a deal with the devil to become this good at an instrument??

🎀 Cute Composer Series: Halloween Season 🎃 The Composers Who Invented the Sound of Horror 🎬🎶

Kubrick used György Ligeti’s music in 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut — without asking him first (clearly he’s not a lawyer…) Ligeti sued, they reached an agreement, and Ligeti later admitted the films made him famous. His music creates sonic clouds — masses of sound without melody or rhythm, just texture — that feel like the inside of a nightmare.

Krzysztof Penderecki’s Threnody — 52 string instruments playing clusters of sound that approximate nuclear destruction — was used in The Exorcist 👹 His music also appears in The Shining, Twin Peaks, Shutter Island, and Children of Men 🎬 FAMOUS!

🎀 Cute Composer Series: Halloween Season 🎃 Mystics, Cults & Composers Who Lost the Plot 👁️🎶

Alexander Scriabin believed he was a divine being sent to transform humanity 👁️ He planned a seven-day performance in the foothills of the Himalayas — combining orchestra, chorus, dancers, incense, colored lights, and architecture dissolving into mist — that would trigger the end of the world and the birth of a new human race. He called it the Mysterium. He died before writing most of it — from an infected pimple on his lip…

Erik Satie founded his own religion — the sole member, bishop, choir, and congregation 🙏 Owned seven identical grey velvet suits and wore one every day for a decade. Ate only white food. Composed a piece (Vexations) meant to be played 840 times in a row. When someone finally performed it in 1963, it took 18 hours and 40 minutes. His apartment was found after his death stuffed with thousands of pieces of paper, unopened letters, and two grand pianos stacked on top of each other (I mean…how??)
