Built in Gulpani Nokat, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya, this government-funded jackfruit processing plant runs as part of a farmers' cooperative and doubles as a community centre. Designed by atArchitecture
@atarchitecture_ , led by Avneesh Tiwari and Neha Rane, the raised, steel-framed building separates the flow of goods from the movement of people, with a central admin office and a public hall opening onto the village fields. Prefabricated steel keeps costs and assembly time low, while local craftsmen build the concrete base. Sitting in a flood- and earthquake-prone region, it also serves as a disaster shelter. Its wider stake is economic: ripe jackfruit that would otherwise go to waste becomes canned food, chips, pickles and flour.
