Muslim stories deserve to be seen, heard and celebrated. But they also deserve to be challenged, debated and discussed. That’s how we grow as storytellers and as an industry. 🎬
Had the pleasure of attending an exclusive screening of Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, written and directed by the brilliant
@curry_crayola featuring an impressive cast including
@mahershalaali John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito and Adia. Outstanding performances all round. Mahershala has this incredible grace which makes him so mesmerising to watch.
There were some wonderful, deeply spiritual moments exploring faith, family and the relationships that shape us. Moments that genuinely moved me and reminded me of the power of our stories.
Not every creative choice landed with me, and some moments felt unnecessary. There’s so much to unpack about this film, and while I didn’t agree with everything, I welcome the conversations it opens up.
Having spent years advocating for authentic Muslim representation on screen, I’m encouraged to see more of our stories reaching mainstream audiences. Our lived experiences are rich, diverse and full of humour, joy, love and creativity. There’s so much more to explore.
No single filmmaker should have to represent an entire community. We need more voices, more genres and an industry willing to invest in them. We’re only at the beginning of that journey, and filmmakers like Bassam are helping to open those doors.
A real pleasure to chat with Bassam and the phenomenal man that is
@johnthecho after the screening.
Huge thanks to
@bafta and
@amazonmgmstudios for the invitation! 🙌🏽
