1993 Japan Avalanche Snowboards tour @avalanchesnowboardsarchive Ok let’s dive into this story. It begins in Eugene Oregon I’m 14 years old. I get invited by Bev Sanders and Mike the team manager to travel to Japan with none other than snowboarding Legend and icon of the sport, Damian Sanders @monsterstage my mind was f…ing blown to get this opportunity at my age.
The journey for me to get my ass on the flight out of PDX was insane. First I had to take a train from my house in southern Oregon by myself because my mom couldn’t drive me to the airport. So I’m on my own taking a cab from the train station in Portland to the airport carrying a huge board bag and luggage. I get dropped off at the international terminal trying to find my flight. I get to the ticket counter and the flight attendant asks who is traveling and I say it’s only me.. the person asked where is your parents? I told her I’m a pro snowboarder and she looked at me like I was crazy!! I told her I was meeting my team mate at the gate.. she gave me one more strange look and I was on my way to my flight.
I met up with Damian super late at the gate and next thing I know we are bound for Tokyo then Hokkaido for 10 days of filming and doing demos. We were also accompanied by two pro surfers from Hawaii two north shore chargers John Shimooka and David Kuwada @dkuwada
Our crew was legendary the snow was awesome, the food was beyond amazing, and the memories were epic. On the last day in Hokkaido we were on a snowcat powder mission to score some riding before partying in Tokyo. We were met with another group of snowboarders from America, John Logic from SnoCon and his wife. Glad Damian and I kept our eyes and senses open because on the last run down we hear a voice in the background screaming for help. It was Johns wife trapped under a bunch Avalanche chunks of ice and snow.. Shit got real, real quick!! Stoked we were able to free her and get her back safe to the cat!! So crazy to think about this trip 33 years ago as an adult and a parent now!!
