This classic shot was everywhere in ‘88… in the mags, in the shops, and plastered to your bedroom wall. Cross Rocket ✅ Neon green frog suit ✅ Palmer and Craig Kelly scopin it ✅ Who else is on the deck? Pretty sure this is a Jon Sposeto pic. Correct me if I’m wrong. @swatch_us World Championships @breckenridgemtn

John Cardiel — skater, snowboarder, Avalanche team ripper… surfer? Nah, not a surfer (that we know of) but he ended up on the cover of a pretty rad book called Snow Beach: Snowboarding Style ‘86-‘96. No surfing in the book either, just tons of epic action and lifestyle photos from snowboarding‘s most important decade and best lensmen. Cover shot 📷 by Reno legend Chris Carnel.

Storytime Saturday with @wetrat Jesse J.

1993 Japan Avalanche Snowboards tour @avalanchesnowboardsarchive Ok let’s dive into this story. It begins in Eugene Oregon I’m 14 years old. I get invited by Bev Sanders and Mike the team manager to travel to Japan with none other than snowboarding Legend and icon of the sport, Damian Sanders @monsterstage my mind was f…ing blown to get this opportunity at my age.

The journey for me to get my ass on the flight out of PDX was insane. First I had to take a train from my house in southern Oregon by myself because my mom couldn’t drive me to the airport. So I’m on my own taking a cab from the train station in Portland to the airport carrying a huge board bag and luggage. I get dropped off at the international terminal trying to find my flight. I get to the ticket counter and the flight attendant asks who is traveling and I say it’s only me.. the person asked where is your parents? I told her I’m a pro snowboarder and she looked at me like I was crazy!! I told her I was meeting my team mate at the gate.. she gave me one more strange look and I was on my way to my flight.

I met up with Damian super late at the gate and next thing I know we are bound for Tokyo then Hokkaido for 10 days of filming and doing demos. We were also accompanied by two pro surfers from Hawaii two north shore chargers John Shimooka and David Kuwada @dkuwada

Our crew was legendary the snow was awesome, the food was beyond amazing, and the memories were epic. On the last day in Hokkaido we were on a snowcat powder mission to score some riding before partying in Tokyo. We were met with another group of snowboarders from America, John Logic from SnoCon and his wife. Glad Damian and I kept our eyes and senses open because on the last run down we hear a voice in the background screaming for help. It was Johns wife trapped under a bunch Avalanche chunks of ice and snow.. Shit got real, real quick!! Stoked we were able to free her and get her back safe to the cat!! So crazy to think about this trip 33 years ago as an adult and a parent now!!

Sure, “Japow” is all the rage now. The Avalanche Team was up in that Japanese pow over 35 years ago. Here, Brinette Battaglia threads some bonsais for the lens of @sonnymillerfilms in ‘88. #snowboarding #snowboardhistory #avalanchesnowboards #japan 🔺 by @avalanchesnowboardsarchive

Undersized board, oversized clothes and gloves optional… thems was the rules in the mid-90s. Style icon Jesse Johnson shows you how. Swipe for the D-Series catalog layout. >>

This board ripped for its time the D-series from Avalanche Snowboards.

Bev was not simply the Avalanche marketing maven and spokeswoman, she was the West Coast ambassador of snowboarding to the ski resort industry, working tirelessly behind the scenes and late at night to help us achieve acceptance and chairlift access. Swipe to hear her talk about the pre-resort days and where snowboarding was headed. If you’ve enjoyed a chair to the top of your favorite resort, Bev played a part in that. Thanks Bev! And happy birthday! #bevsanders #womenwhoride #avalanchesnowboardsarchive by @avalanchesnowboardsarchive

Short, but sweet and stylish… John sent us this quick clip from filming with MackDawg for 1990’s New Kids On The Twock.

Name this trick…
1) Stale Lookback
2) Reverse Mule Kick
3) Twist-o-matic
4) ____________ ?
No matter what you call it, the noise I hear in my head is “SPROIIIING!”

There actually WAS a moment in snowboarding’s history when not just riding, but RULING bumps was a thing (for some) and Avalanche made a board for that. The Bumps Pro Mogul came in two sizes, 165 & 175, had the same shape as the Kick, but also extra layers of Kevlar to make it stiff and ‘shock proof.’ And if you thought riding a big, stiff board in moguls was a bad idea, then you did not have the skill set of the Avalanche Team.
