STRUCTURE, IMPROVISATION & FREEDOM
There’s a particular freedom that comes from knowing your way around an instrument. Your hands become familiar with it. You begin to hear which notes sit well together & how a change in pace alters the feeling of what you’re playing.
Structure gives you somewhere to begin & something to return to. A steady rhythm or a simple sequence can support you while you explore, especially when you’re still finding confidence in your playing.
As these foundations become familiar, they take up less of your attention. You have more room to listen. A phrase suggests a variation. An unexpected note gives you an idea. You can follow it for a while, then find your way back.
This is where improvisation begins to make sense: through a growing relationship with what you’ve learned & what you hear in the moment.
When guiding a sound session, that relationship matters. A sense of pacing helps you give the experience continuity while leaving room to respond as it develops. You can prepare carefully & still be curious about what happens when you play.
We explore this throughout Alchemy of Sound, our sound healing training in Sri Lanka, spending time with musical foundations & putting them into practice.
If you’d like to develop your playing & learn to guide others through sound, find upcoming dates & details through the link in our bio.
