For 22 minutes, a machine in France held onto plasma hotter than the core of the sun 🔥⚛️ Researchers at France’s CEA kept a fusion plasma running for 1,337 seconds inside the WEST tokamak, setting a new record for how long a reactor of its kind has sustained a reaction. That’s about 25% longer than the previous record, set by China’s EAST reactor just weeks earlier. Throughout the run, the plasma stayed at roughly 50 million degrees Celsius. Holding plasma steady for longer stretches is one of the biggest hurdles in turning fusion into a real-world energy source, and this run pushes scientists another step closer.
