What makes a fort a heritage site? Is it only its architecture, its structures and the objects it preserves? Or is it equally shaped by the beliefs, rituals and practices that have continued within its walls?

At Jaigarh, tangible and intangible heritage exist alongside one another. The temples within the fort, including Mehandi Balaji ka Mandir, are part of its physical landscape. The traditions associated with these spaces, however, reveal another dimension of its history.

Consider where Mehandi Balaji ka Mandir stands: near Nathawaton ka Tanka, within the same landscape of stone and structure. Here, faith is not set apart from the built fort but placed within it. While walls, cannons and architectural spaces preserve the material history of Jaigarh, its places of worship and continuing traditions help us understand the lives and beliefs that shaped it.

Perhaps to understand a fort fully, we must look beyond what it was built with, and consider what was practised, believed and passed down within it. by @jaigarh

The shastra pujan, the worship of the weapons, is part of the annual Dussehra rituals, and the priests from @jaipurcitypalace come to perform it. These weapons were made to defend. Today they are thanked for it.

In 1727, a city began with an idea.

An idea that looked beyond the security of the hills towards the possibilities of the open plains. A city where architecture, science, craft, governance and commerce could come together to shape not just a place, but a way of life.

Jaipur was imagined with a sense of possibility. And over three centuries, each generation has added something of its own to that imagination.

As Jaipur approaches 300 years, we return to the ideas that began it all.

There is more than one way to measure greatness at Jaigarh, Jaivan commands attention with its extraordinary scale. Yet, in the details of its barrel lies another story, one of intricate ornamentation, skilled craftsmanship and an eye for beauty.

History is not only found in what an object was built to do, but also in the details it has carried through time. by @jaigarh

Jaigarh was never built once and left untouched. Across its long history, the fort was continuously repaired, strengthened and expanded, adapting to changing needs and circumstances.

Its walls carry traces of that life, layers of plaster and colour, weathering, repairs, cracks and surfaces shaped by time. What may first appear to be simply a beautiful or unusual texture is, on closer inspection, a record of the fort itself. Each surface has been exposed to the elements, altered by use, cared for, repaired and allowed to age.

Look closely enough, and the walls begin to tell their own story. Of a fort that has been built, strengthened, repaired and adapted across generations.

Somewhere between the cracks, colours and layers is a record of time. by @jaigarh
