Banjo today pulling out all the stops to avoid having his nails done 🙈 Some of Banjo’s nails we presume may never have been cut including one of his dew claws which had grown out quite long - but today, we got every nail done 🥳 Did he love the process? Not entirely. But we had massive wins in so far as he learnt there are somethings that just need to get done! The uncomfortable few seconds don’t last forever! And there are still rewards to be had for moments of bravery by pushing through and trusting the process!
Nail maintenance and handling is tough and we cover it in our Puppy Development Program at
@westblacktownvet_ because it is such an important skill to ingrain with young dogs however older dogs can learn too. Just like Banjo who is over a year and a half old who has always hated his feet being touched, forget nail trims and yet he picked up so much today and we successfully started trimming all those nails back 😍
Why is nail maintenance so important to me as a trainer?
1) Teaching dogs to trust you enough to push through things they arnt thrilled about is a game changer
2) Walking on nails is uncomfortable
3) Pressure on the nails has a flow on effect altering your dogs ability to stand, walk & function properly (even if we may not notice it)
