Hi — I’m Nad the dog trainer & the hands behind Pups Academy 👋🐶 Yep dog trainer, human coach, social media assistant, accountant & booking agent - that’s me!

If you’re new here, here’s what you might want to know:
I help dog owners turn chaotic walks, ignored commands, constant anxiety, destructive and overexcited behaviour into calm, focused, reliable behaviours — even around distractions.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve worked with owners just like you to help them get real results — not just in sessions, but at home too. I’m an NDTF qualified dog trainer working with dogs of all breeds at any age to run in-home training, puppy development classes, scent work classes, group training classes and fulfilment walks.

I don’t just “train dogs” — I teach owners how to understand their dogs on a deeper level, communicate clearly, confidently and effectively to create the life they’ve always wanted with their dog.

If your dog:
• pulls on the lead
• doesn’t listen outside
• goes wild around other dogs
• seems overly stressed/nervous
• is a puppy and needs some direction (along with you!)

You’re exactly who I help 👇

Fill out the link in my bio or text 0466800347 with your dogs details (even if you’re not sure where to start) and let’s get you and your dog on the path to success today 🌟

A quick behind the scenes of our time on Sunrise yesterday! 🫶📺 I didn’t think being on live tv was on my bingo card for 2026 but here we are! So proud of @neonthetoller for handling the whole thing and doing everything he could in a mostly foreign environment. If I hadn’t forgotten several of his tricks on the spot that might’ve helped so evidently as a team he is still the one carrying us 😅 Thank you @bluemaligator @kristen_mueller for everything & for being behind the camera all morning for us 🥰 by @pups_academy

Banjo today pulling out all the stops to avoid having his nails done 🙈 Some of Banjo’s nails we presume may never have been cut including one of his dew claws which had grown out quite long - but today, we got every nail done 🥳 Did he love the process? Not entirely. But we had massive wins in so far as he learnt there are somethings that just need to get done! The uncomfortable few seconds don’t last forever! And there are still rewards to be had for moments of bravery by pushing through and trusting the process!

Nail maintenance and handling is tough and we cover it in our Puppy Development Program at @westblacktownvet_ because it is such an important skill to ingrain with young dogs however older dogs can learn too. Just like Banjo who is over a year and a half old who has always hated his feet being touched, forget nail trims and yet he picked up so much today and we successfully started trimming all those nails back 😍

Why is nail maintenance so important to me as a trainer?
1) Teaching dogs to trust you enough to push through things they arnt thrilled about is a game changer
2) Walking on nails is uncomfortable
3) Pressure on the nails has a flow on effect altering your dogs ability to stand, walk & function properly (even if we may not notice it)

Do you have a young puppy in Western Sydney and want to get them started on the right paw? Contact @westblacktownvet_ to book into our last puppy development program for 2026 🐾 Limited spots available!

Like most dog owners - I don’t train my dog in a vet consult room very often and naturally being examined and getting vaccinations can be stressful for any animal! This is why I make sure part of my dogs early skills include handling and focus skills - like we do in our Puppy Development Program at @westblacktownveterinaryclinic to ensure the whole process is as minimally stressful for my dog, myself and the vet staff! We prepare at home so when we do need these skills they’re reliable even in a different environment. Often we say ‘my dog knows this’ when they only really know most of their training at home. Take your training onto the driveway, then down the street and beyond to ensure your dog really knows their training skills. Proof your skills with distance, duration and distractions even just in the living room at home and you’ll have a far better training relationship and understanding between you & your dog. If our dogs don’t do something we have to truly consider whether we’ve shown them that picture in training and prepared them adequately for it. I didn’t restrain Neon at all this visit which won’t always be the case but is a nice way to know that our training and early work has paid off.

What skills did we actually use this visit?

🩺 Place Training - such a helpful skill for many elements of living with our dogs i.e. mopping/vacuuming, being able to leave your dog close by (safely) non-dog friendly venues for a moment or being able to give your dog a familiar skill to default to in a less familiar place like the consult room at the vets! This skill is covered in our Puppy Development Program 🐾

🩺 Closed hand food lure - a way to get focus on a closed fist where your dog understands the moment the hand is open they can grab the food. A great impulse control exercise for any dog & a handy way to gain focus on a specific spot. An article indication is another one we sometimes use.

Continued in the comments ⬇️ by @pups_academy

There are a number of things you should be teaching your young puppy that’s far more important than sit & drop. This skill falls into what Id consider a foundation skill for almost any dog! Especially impulsive puppies that can’t seem to keep 4 paws on the ground 🤭

The closed hand vs. open hand lure can be used for a number of things however with a young puppy it’s a great skill you can use to teach impulse control and counter a puppy’s natural instinct to jump for attention & affection. It also works as a great way to teach dogs or puppies to take food more gently - waiting for an open hand to invite them to take the food rather than gnawing at hands left right & centre.

How to train a closed hand vs. open hand lure:
1. Hold a piece of food in a closed fist in-front of your dog. Initially they will lick & bite to try get the food out - keep your hand still*.

2. When they pull back from your hand even for a second, mark this choice and open your hand to present the food in your palm. It’s normal for your initial reps to take a little longer before your dog gives up trying to get the food out.

*Some dogs pick this up quicker when the hand is quickly moved away then re-presented to help clarify what behaviour you’re looking for.

As they understand the expected behaviour you can start to wait longer before marking whilst they stare at the closed hand. Over the next few reps your dog will understand that a closed fist means just watch - an open hand means take the food.

Will you try this with your dog or puppy? Do they already know it? Tag us! 🐶

As a balanced trainer it can be disappointing to see such aversion to basic feedback principals like telling your dog ‘no’ and correcting poor behaviour when you know what avoiding this leads to.

Balanced training gets a bad rap because there is a huge misunderstanding in the methods and delivery of feedback. On top of this, highly compulsive trainers can also claim to be ‘balanced’ trainers. We all get put in the same basket.

Good balanced training is based on solid foundations of TAUGHT behaviours using motivators the dog already wants i.e. food/toys/affection. But reliable training cannot stop there because there will come a day where you encounter something your dog wants more than the motivator(s) you may be able to offer. This might be smells, other dogs maybe even deer/kangaroos! This does not mean you skip the foundations! It means you have a way to round out your training on both ends - teach the dog, build behaviours using positive reinforcement, support the dog through the learning process and still tell them ‘no’ where necessary.

Yelling no at your dog is also not going to change anything. The no is also taught & may be the one cue that actually keeps your dog safe one day. Whether it’s not eating dangerous things in the home, not chasing after a dog at the park or not running out the door into the street.

If we keep shying away from the full spectrum of motivation: positive & negative reinforcement + positive & negative punishment - we inevitably end up with more dogs who are limited to one or more of the following:
- Strictly on leash outdoors without the chance to run & explore, to truly be a dog in nature
- No adventures to the cafe
- No holiday trips with the family
- No play time with other dogs
- No greeting guests when they arrive
- No walks
- Restrictions inside the house i.e. too much time on leash, crated or left alone in the backyard

And frankly I think living life as a dog in an urban world like that is FAR more unfair than teaching ‘NO’.

What do you think?

#balancedtraining #realdogtraining #dogtrainingsydney #dogtrainer #dogtraining by @pups_academy

And to anyone I maybe have said any of the above to - please know it’s because I want your dog to have the healthiest, fullest and longest life possible long term! I do in-fact care about my clients feelings (just incase that was in question!) 🥲

Share the slide that resonates with you (and maybe didn’t want to say to anyone directly 🙈)
