I love a quick project, but I’m not ready to be done with this one yet.

Lately I have been feeling the pressure to change things up and keep pace with everything else going on out there. Instead of racing to catch up, I’m focusing on slowing down.

I love making quilts, but I’m not a machine and I think that increasing use of AI makes that distinction more important than ever ❤️

Yes! Completely agree. Slowing down—“mindful quilting” always turns out to be the most rewarding/ fulfilling. Enjoy the process and the beauty in the materials that you specially selected for the project. It’s how we all got here—the love and appreciation we have for creating. It’s definitely easy to get sucked into the fast pace mode of everything around us. Appreciate this gentle reminder.

I recently finished hand quilting a throw sized quilt I pieced about five years ago. The quilting was started at that time but I stopped, feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work it would take to finish it. Once I got restarted on it, it took so little time! Maybe a month! Now, I have to have a hand quilting project going at all times!

Process has always been important. For me more important than the final piece.

I love hand quilting, it’s all I’ve ever known. It takes me years to finish a quilt, but because of that it keeps the number of quilts I have to just a few special ones. With seeing the couch here I’m curious, are you still loving it? And has it held up well with everyday wear?

I was rushing to get my autumn table runner quited. Using new tools *FINALLY* bought a walking foot... I was about 60% through when I sewed straight through my finger. One needle pass right through my nail. I'm sew slowing down.... at least for a while!

You are so right. I have done slow things for at long time now. I don’t NEED more knitted sweaters, more embroidered pillows or more quilts. So it is more about the design, the proces, the use of fabric or yarn and the joy of using my hands. So I make more difficult sweaters, use embroideryfabric with smaller holes and exploring new ways (for me) of making quilts of all the scraps I got from a friend. And I enjoy using my hands more than using the machine. So handquilting is definitely next step, and maybe even handpiecing.

What are some good resources for learning hand quilting?

Especially in quilting I’ve always enjoyed the making so much more than the finish. I’m always kind of sad, when a quilt is finished, but I enjoy the process of making it immensely.

So many of us are turning to slowing down our creative processes in this world that is moving more quickly every day. We can control our own processes, when unable to control so many other things. Enjoy your hand sewing. ❤️
