If repayment is the standard, why should the conversation stop at France’s borders?

Macron’s call for repayment after looting raises a bigger question for me: what about the wealth, resources and cultural artifacts taken from African nations under colonial rule?

In this commentary, I ask why restitution should be a serious conversation for African nations too.

What would meaningful restitution look like to you—returning artifacts, financial compensation, or both?

My heart goes out to the businesses and families affected by the riots in France. I do not condone the destruction or looting, nor is my commentary directed at those who have suffered. My point is specifically about Macron’s remarks on restitution and the irony of demanding accountability for looting while France’s own colonial history of exploitation and resource extraction remains largely unaddressed.
