🎬 GUMMO (1997) — AN UNDERGROUND CULT CLASSIC FILMED IN MY OLD NEIGHBORHOOD!

Some movies entertain you. Others leave you wondering what you just watched. Gummo is definitely the latter.

Released in 1997, Harmony Korine’s directorial debut is one of the strangest and most controversial independent films of the ’90s and maybe all time!

🎥 THE STORY:

Set in the tornado-ravaged town of Xenia, Ohio, Gummo follows two teenage boys, Solomon and Tummler, through a world of poverty, boredom, violence, and bizarre encounters.

There’s no traditional plot or Hollywood ending. Instead, it’s a disturbing collection of moments depicting life on the forgotten fringes of American society.

🏚️ THE NASHVILLE CONNECTION:

Here’s what makes this movie special to me.

Although set in Ohio, Gummo was filmed in Nashville, including The Nations in West Nashville, the neighborhood I grew up in!

This was LONG before The Nations became the redeveloped neighborhood people know today.

Watching this film is like looking through a time capsule of old West Nashville. Many of those streets, people, and houses have changed dramatically or disappeared altogether.

🍿 THE RECEPTION:

When Gummo premiered, critics were deeply divided.

Some considered it disgusting, exploitative, and nearly unwatchable. Others praised its fearless, unconventional filmmaking. I agree with the latter.

Legendary director Werner Herzog was among its admirers.

Despite its limited mainstream success, Gummo developed a devoted underground following and eventually became a cult classic.

Nearly 30 years later, it’s still disturbing audiences and influencing independent filmmakers.

It’s weird. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s definitely not for everybody.

But knowing a piece of underground cinema history was filmed in the streets of my childhood neighborhood makes it fascinating to me.

Have you seen Gummo? What do you think of it? And if you grew up in old West Nashville, do you recognize any of the locations?
