Karl Deisseroth came to neuroscience through words. His love of literature and writing drew him toward the human brain, and a required psychiatry rotation in medical school set him on the path to developing optogenetics. In this conversation, he traces that journey.

Deisseroth, a Stanford professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was one of three scientists awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering and developing optogenetics. @bioe_stanford is a department jointly run by the School of Engineering and @stanford.med.

Sooo inspiring! Just forward this to my sons. This story highlights the importance of following one’s passions/ hobbies/ skills however unrelated they may seem to one’s chosen field of formal education. Ultimately it all just fits in together!

💐💐💐The Definition of Mind is still elusive..Is it simply an organ which lits up light switch .( opto genetics )… What about the consciousness? .. can it be measured ???Has Limbic brain simply triggers emotions or thoughts emanates from limbic brain rather than neocortex ? .. Or Extroverts have do different brain from introverts .? .. can The fountain of creativity could be measured by optokinetics .???.. ohh! Just my Freudian slip . Thanks .🏛️📚🏥🇺🇸🇮🇳✍️❤️
