California is a leader in protest and progress, violence and healing, catastrophe and natural beauty, innovation and inequality. Its contradictions create instability and raise questions about the future. What do Californians want California to be?
When California celebrated 175 years of statehood last September, the anniversary prompted us to reflect on the histories that have shaped the state’s present and the forces that will shape its future.
Over the past year, Zócalo Public Square turned these questions into a series of essays and public programs titled “California 175: What Connects California?” We brought together leaders and thinkers from across the state, and from all walks of life, to explore California’s contradictions and envision what the state might become over the next 175 years.
