What would it take to solve the U.S. affordability crisis? For starters, we need to understand what the word "affordability" really means. "In today’s political discourse 'affordability' is another (perhaps less obviously strident) way to say that for a lot of people (maybe most), capitalism feels broken," writes historian Jennifer Mercieca. Read “How the Affordability Crisis Broke the American Dream” at the link in bio. 📷️: AP Photo/Nam Y. For millennia, we've been imagining women as monsters. That's no accident, argues Columbia professor Eleanor Johnson, who traces the patriarchal origins of the "monstrous bitch”: “Western patriarchy has systematically energized our cultural fears around female reproduction. Excavating its past can help us see our current, embattled reproductive reality in a new light,” she writes. Read the essay at the link in bio. 📷: Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0 FR) by @thepublicsquare

Nostalgia is trending on TikTok in Russia and many other places around the world. Like protests in the streets of Paris, it's a symptom of widespread political frustration, writes Shura Guliaeva. Read “Voting While Russian Means Longing for the Past and the Future” at the link in bio. 📷️: AP Photo/Michael Yassukovich by @thepublicsquare
California is a leader in protest and progress, violence and healing, catastrophe and natural beauty, innovation and inequality. Its contradictions create instability and raise questions about the future. What do Californians want California to be? When California celebrated 175 years of statehood last September, the anniversary prompted us to reflect on the histories that have shaped the state’s present and the forces that will shape its future. Over the past year, Zócalo Public Square turned these questions into a series of essays and public programs titled “California 175: What Connects California?” We brought together leaders and thinkers from across the state, and from all walks of life, to explore California’s contradictions and envision what the state might become over the next 175 years. But as the governor leaves office, some have concerns about the future of rehabilitation, writes incarcerated journalist Edwin E. Chavez. Read the essay at link in bio. 📷: AP Photo/Eric Risberg, File by @thepublicsquare
