Help! BMX riders, we’d really appreciate some advice.

Jamie is keen to improve his jumping, but I’m struggling to work out exactly what he needs to change.

Watching this back, he looks quite low in the air, and his front wheel seems to land first. Is his weight too far forward? Should he lean back more or pull the bars up? Or might he find it easier on his 14-inch Park BMX because it’s smaller?

We have a manual trainer and a few ramps at home, so I’d be grateful for any practical drills he could practise away from the track.

I don’t want to be that parent giving instructions when I’m not even sure I’m right!

If you know your BMX, please have a watch and let me know what you think. What would you work on first?

Any advice from riders, coaches or fellow BMX parents would be massively appreciated.

Try left foot forward, keep pedals left because when he's landing his right foot goes down so all his weight goes forward

Well I do downhill racing which is different but my tip is as you approach it try to lean back but also plant your feet onto the pedals so lean back and pull hard on your handle bars

He’s too young to jump that. Needs to pump at his age. Great coaches at the club can help.

He needs to jump like he would on the trampoline, sounds a bit weird but it's very similar. so low to prep his takeoff and to give somewhere to spring from for takeoff and then power up and push off through his legs and extend as he launches.

You can see on the video that he is standing tall approaching the jump. Then he compresses on the rise of the jump. This sucks energy out of the lift when leaving the lip of the jump and unbalances the bike. Try compressing (squashing) just before the rise and then standing tall (popping) as he leaves the lip. This will gain more height. However, beware poor technique. A strong bunny hop and a good foot scrape (on the pedals) will help keep the rider and bike together and mitigate crash potential.

Squash down on approach to the jump, and pop up at the tip of the jump.
