6 days agoTo label contemporary Latin dance performance attire as “fruity” is to dismiss the deep historical and cultural contexts that have shaped, and continue to inform, its evolution. Using homophobic rhetoric to describe these garments not only harms LGBTQIA+ members of our Latin dance communities, but also reinforces restrictive, misinformed ideas about gender and how we are expected to express ourselves and participate in the community. Furthermore, such language disrespects the Indigenous and Native peoples whose traditional dress has influenced and contributed to the styles we see today. Ultimately, reducing these garments to a homophobic stereotype erases their cultural significance and perpetuates harmful attitudes that undermine the inclusivity and diversity of our dance community.
