Gen Z wants the future to look like a Windows XP wallpaper.

Think tropical fish, bright blue skies, glossy gadgets, and green landscapes. The aesthetic is called Frutiger Aero, and its appeal goes beyond nostalgia for old technology. For some young people, it represents a version of the future they grew up imagining.

Senior reporter Kelsey Vlamis explores why this retro tech aesthetic is finding a new audience.

Decorating a room with fish lamps and a DIY Windows logo mirror is what people do when the future they were promised turned into surveillance and layoffs.

Frutiger Aero is nostalgia for a future that never shipped. Glossy buttons, tropical fish, grass that green. Tech looked like it wanted to be your friend back then.

It’s fascinating how a corporate operating system from our past unexpectedly became the ultimate symbols of peace and optimism for the next generation. Time is a great artist 🤠🌊🐠
