The username nobody has ever verified. On October 31, 2008, in the middle of a global financial crisis, someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto posted a nine-page paper to a cryptography mailing list. It was titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System," and it proposed money that could move between strangers without a bank or any trusted third party in between, using cryptographic proof to stop the same coin being spent twice. About two months later, on January 3, 2009, the first Bitcoin block was mined. Embedded in it was a newspaper headline from that day: "Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks." Then the author faded out. Satoshi answered questions, shipped code, and was never identified. No verified name, no verified face, no confirmed count of whether it was one person or several. People have claimed the name, and none of the claims has held up. Every platform since asks you to trust a handle. The most consequential handle in modern money is one nobody can trace to a person. Eighteen years on, the identity behind the name has still never been verified. #RetroTech #OldTech #VintageTech by @profiletrace
The migration that ate a generation's demos. Between 2003 and 2015, MySpace was where bands lived. First songs, first photos, glitter layouts and all. In March 2019 the company confirmed a botched server migration had lost all of it: roughly 50 million songs from 14 million artists, with photos and videos gone too, and no backup to restore from. One rescue exists. The Internet Archive later published about 490,000 tracks recovered from an old academic study, a set fans call the MySpace Dragon Hoard. That is about 1 percent of what was lost. Your first band, your first profile song, your Top 8 drama: the platform was the archive, right up until it was not. Keep a copy of anything that matters somewhere you control. Platforms are landlords, not vaults. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The first message was a crash. On the night of October 29, 1969, two programmers sat 350 miles apart: Charley Kline at UCLA, Bill Duvall at the Stanford Research Institute. They were testing the ARPANET, the network that became the internet, and the first job was the most ordinary one there is: log in. Kline typed L. Duvall, on the phone, confirmed it arrived. He typed O. That arrived too. He typed G, and Duvall's machine crashed. So the first message ever sent between two computers on the network was "lo", an unfinished login. About an hour later they fixed the bug and the full word went through. Every username ever typed into a login box descends from that attempt. The first one did not even finish, and it still counted. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The social network with igloos. Club Penguin launched on October 24, 2005. Lance Priebe and Lane Merrifield built it at New Horizon Interactive in Kelowna, British Columbia, after failing to find a social site they trusted for their own kids. It grew out of Priebe's earlier penguin chat experiments, Experimental Penguins in 2000 and the Penguin Chat series that followed. It had 15,000 users at launch and 1.4 million within five months, with no marketing budget. Disney bought the company in August 2007 for $350 million. By July 2013 there were more than 200 million registered penguin accounts. For a lot of people this was the first internet identity they ever had. The penguin name you picked at nine was your first handle. The igloo you decorated was your first profile page. Getting banned for creative swearing around the safe-chat filter was a rite of passage, and screenshots of the ban screen became a meme genre that outlived the game. Disney shut it down on March 30, 2017, to make room for Club Penguin Island, which closed the following year. On the final night the servers were full anyway. Thousands of penguins crowded the Town and the Iceberg for a shutdown party for a world that was about to be deleted. The accounts are gone. The usernames are legend. That is the trade the old web kept offering. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The first click. On October 27, 1994, Wired magazine's web offshoot HotWired launched with something no website had sold before: banner ads. The one everyone remembers was AT&T's. A small strip in a rainbow font asked, "Have you ever clicked your mouse right HERE? You will." AT&T paid $30,000 for three months. Of the people who saw the ad, 44 percent clicked it. A good banner ad today is lucky to get one click in a thousand. The click did not lead to a checkout. It led to a tour of seven of the world's art museums, a demonstration of what the network could carry. The first ad on the web was not really selling phone service. It was selling the idea that clicking took you somewhere. Every pop-up, pre-roll and sponsored post since is descended from that one strip of pixels. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The deleted city. GeoCities started in 1994. You picked a neighborhood that matched your obsession, got a numbered lot, and built a page out of animated GIFs, MIDI music and pure intent. At its peak it was one of the biggest places on the web, and Yahoo bought it in 1999 for over $3 billion. On October 26, 2009, Yahoo shut it down. All 38 million pages of the main site were set to be erased. The Internet Archive, Archive Team and other volunteers preserved tens of millions of pages before the switch, a backup of about 650 gigabytes that is still browsable today. GeoCities was the web before profiles. Nobody handed you a template identity. You made a place, and people visited you at an address you could say out loud. This account spends its days tracing profiles. GeoCities is the reminder that the web worked fine before anyone had one. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The first username you ever defended. AIM launched in 1997. For a lot of us it was the first place we were a name instead of a person: a screen name you chose at 13 and then had to live with, a buddy list that was a social hierarchy, and away messages that did the emotional labor of a status update years before statuses existed. AOL discontinued AIM on December 15, 2017, twenty years in. The buddy lists, profiles and chat logs that were not saved went with it. Every username system since is AIM with better graphics. The screen name walked so the handle could run. What was yours? Ours is a story for another post. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
1,000 songs in your pocket. On October 23, 2001, Steve Jobs pulled a small white box out of his jeans pocket at an Apple event and told the room it held 1,000 songs. The iPod: 5 gigabytes, $399, a mechanical scroll wheel, and a battery that outlasted the MP3 players it was about to bury. It was not the first MP3 player. It won anyway, on the wheel and on iTunes: your whole CD binder, ripped, searchable, and synced in minutes. One thumb ran the entire library. Then it became a signal. Apple shipped white earbuds in a world of black cords, and the silhouette ads turned the cord into a logo. You could spot an iPod across a train car without seeing the device at all. The line ran 21 years: mini, nano, shuffle, touch. Apple discontinued the last iPod in May 2022, years after the iPhone absorbed it. Music stopped being a shelf of objects the day the iPod shipped. It became a library you carried. What was on yours? #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The song you were playing was your status. In 2005, MSN Messenger added a small feature with outsized consequences: it took the song playing in Windows Media Player or iTunes and printed it next to your display name, where your entire contact list could see it. There was no post to compose and no audience to pick. If the song was playing, it was showing. So people learned to perform with it: the track looped until a certain person signed in, the lyric chosen like a message in a bottle, a whole identity broadcast one song at a time. And it cut both ways. The same feature announced whatever your shuffle served at 2 AM, to friends, family and coworkers alike. Turning it off existed. Finding the setting in time was the hard part. Microsoft retired Messenger in 2013 and folded everyone into Skype. But the idea never left. Discord statuses, Spotify shares, every now playing line in every app is this 2005 feature, still running. What did yours say about you? #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The poke grew up, briefly. The poke was one of Facebook's oldest features, a button with no purpose anyone could explain. In December 2012, with Snapchat taking off, Facebook turned it into a standalone app, also called Poke. You could send a poke, a message, a photo or a video, and set it to disappear after 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. Sound familiar. Blake Ross and a small team built the app in 12 days, with Zuckerberg himself lending a hand on the code, a deliberate show of speed aimed at every startup watching. It did not work. Snapchat kept growing after Poke launched, and within two months Poke's share of US iPhone users had fallen from about 2 percent to under a quarter of 1 percent. The following year, Facebook offered a reported $3 billion for Snapchat and was turned down. In May 2014, Poke was quietly removed from the App Store, along with Facebook's Camera app. Zuckerberg had called it a joke. The button it was named after is still on Facebook. The app is a trivia question. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
Apple's social network lived inside a store. On September 1, 2010, Apple launched Ping inside iTunes 10. Steve Jobs pitched it as Facebook and Twitter meeting iTunes: follow artists like Lady Gaga, Coldplay and U2, follow your friends, post your favorite songs and albums, and tell people which concerts you were going to. It opened in 23 countries, and a million people joined in the first 48 hours. Then the cracks. The Facebook connection Apple had shown off at launch was pulled within days, over what Jobs called onerous terms from Facebook. What was left was a feed inside a store: 30-second previews, and a buy button next to almost every post. Ping closed on September 30, 2012, just over two years in. Tim Cook's verdict: "We tried Ping and the customer voted." Apple replaced it with the Facebook and Twitter sharing in iTunes that it could not get at launch. #RetroTech #VintageTech #OldTech by @profiletrace
The internet came in the mail. In the 1990s, AOL mailed the world its first connection. Free trial discs, first on floppy disks and then on CDs, went out by the millions: through the mail, inside magazines, in cereal boxes, tucked into seat pockets. The offers kept escalating until a single disc could promise more than 1,000 free hours. The campaign was run by AOL marketing chief Jan Brandt, and by one famous account from inside the company, at the peak AOL's disc orders were consuming about half of the world's CD production. It worked: AOL passed a million members in 1994 and became the front door to the internet for a generation. Most of the discs were never used. They became coasters, frisbees, bird scarers and clock faces. The survivors are collectibles now, cataloged version by version, 3.0 through Titanium 6.0. Getting online could start with a disc you found at breakfast.
