“Exactly sixteen years ago this weekend we put the key through the letterbox for the new owners of our old house in Peckham and headed west to Somerset. Everything felt new and sharp for it being the first time of a new experience. A surge of well-being fell upon us as we pulled off the road above the valley and onto the single-track lane with its central strip of grass, high banks and hedges. We wound down the windows as we descended into the valley and have done so ever since after a long journey to take in the air and moisture and the feeling of having arrived. We left the car laden and opened the little porch that kept the weather from the house with a new set of keys that unlocked our way into this next life. Inside, the still smell of damp, cold chimneys, the farmer’s swirly carpets and rooms waiting to be occupied by our furniture that was somewhere behind us on the M4.”

In today’s article @coyotewillow revisits our arrival at Hillside and the changes that have taken place since.

I have a college degree, and I’m grateful for it.

But some of the biggest financial opportunities I’ve had in my life came from learning skills that nobody ever taught me in a classroom.

And I think that’s something more young people need to understand.

I graduated college in 2002 and spent 16 years working as a financial advisor.

That career gave me a solid foundation, and I wouldn’t trade that experience.

But you know what college never taught me?

How to start a blog that makes money.

How to build a YouTube channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

How to turn posting pictures on Facebook into a business generating tens of thousands of dollars a month.

I had to figure all of that out myself.

And believe me, there was plenty of trial and error along the way. 😂

Now we’re living in a world where someone can earn millions playing video games online while another person spends six figures on an advanced degree and struggles to find a decent-paying job.

Does that mean college is worthless?

Absolutely not.

We still need doctors, engineers, accountants, and plenty of other professionals whose careers require formal education.

But I think we’ve spent WAY too long telling kids that college is the only respectable path to financial success.

There are people making incredible incomes in skilled trades, running small businesses, creating content, and building skills they learned outside a classroom.

Not everyone will become a millionaire YouTuber. Those success stories are the exception.

But not everyone who graduates college ends up with a great career, either.

As a dad of four, I want my kids to understand that education matters, but so does learning how to solve problems, develop valuable skills, and recognize opportunities.

Because a diploma might help you get your foot in the door.

But what you do with the opportunities in front of you matters a whole lot more

Take it all in, Arsenal fans. This one is special! 💪🏾❤️
