• A Tumultuous History: While it once flourished as the epicenter of Heian-period Buddhism, the temple suffered catastrophic damage in 1571 when it was set ablaze by the forces of Oda Nobunaga. It was later restored through the efforts of figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, taking on the form seen today.
