The Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art is an elegant museum located on the slopes of Mount Tennozan in Oyamazaki Town, Kyoto Prefecture. It integrates a century-old, British-style Tudor Gothic main building with modern structures designed by architect Tadao Ando—such as the subterranean "Jewel Box Underground"—as well as a lush, natural garden spanning approximately 5,500 tsubo (about 18,000 square meters).

Facilities and Highlights

• Historic Architecture: The museum opened in 1996, preserving and repurposing a stately villa (the main building) originally constructed by the businessman Shotaro Kaga.
• Designs by Tadao Ando: Notable features include the "Jewel Box Underground"—a circular, subterranean exhibition space designed with an emphasis on harmony with the natural environment.
• Collection and Exhibitions: The museum houses and displays works such as Claude Monet’s *Water Lilies* series, as well as pieces by artists associated with the *Mingei* (folk craft) movement—including Kanjiro Kawai and Bernard Leach—who were supported by Tamesaburo Yamamoto, the first president of Asahi Breweries. by @sunyuji_725

Monju-ro, located at the entrance to the Eastern Pagoda (Todo) area of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, is an iconic two-storied gate that serves as a symbol of the temple.

Key Features and History

• Founding: It was established in 866 (the 8th year of the Jogan era) by the monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin, modeled after the Manjushri Bodhisattva Hall found on Mount Wutai in China.
• Purpose: It serves as a training hall for the "constant sitting samadhi" (*joza-zanmai*)—one of the four types of *samadhi* (meditative practices) prescribed by Saicho—and also functions as the main gateway to Enryaku-ji Temple.
• Structure: Although the original building was destroyed by fire on several occasions, the current structure was rebuilt in 1668 (the 8th year of the Kanbun era). It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property and features an eclectic architectural style that blends Chinese-influenced (*karayo*) and traditional Japanese (*wayo*) elements.
• Blessings: A statue of Manjushri Bodhisattva (*Monju Bosatsu*) is enshrined on the upper floor. Drawing on the well-known Japanese proverb, "When three people gather, they possess the wisdom of Manjushri," the site is a popular destination for those seeking success in their studies or wishing to pass academic examinations. by @sunyuji_725

Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei—founded by Saicho toward the end of the Nara period—serves as the head temple of the Tendai school of Buddhism. Revered as the "mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism," it is also a designated World Heritage Site.

History and Temple Grounds

• Vast Temple Grounds: Spanning approximately 1,700 hectares across Mount Hiei (at an elevation of 848 meters), the temple complex comprises about 100 structures distributed across three main areas: Todo (Eastern Precinct), Saito (Western Precinct), and Yokokawa.
• A Tumultuous History: While it once flourished as the epicenter of Heian-period Buddhism, the temple suffered catastrophic damage in 1571 when it was set ablaze by the forces of Oda Nobunaga. It was later restored through the efforts of figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu, taking on the form seen today.

Atmosphere and Key Highlights

• A Solemn Atmosphere: Nestled in a scenic, nature-rich setting that offers panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the city of Kyoto, the temple provides visitors with an experience of profound tranquility and solemnity.
• Iconic Structures: Notable buildings include the Konpon Chudo (the main hall and a National Treasure), the Shaka-do in the Western Precinct (the oldest surviving structure at Enryaku-ji), and the "Ninai-do"—a pair of halls arranged symmetrically.
• The Eternal Flame: The temple is home to a sacred flame that has remained lit continuously for 1,200 years—ever since the temple’s founding. by @sunyuji_725
