“…there's a symbolic aspect to it. For centuries, many, many years, people have minimized Africa, geographically, economically, from every which way. They've always had this thing that the continent is broken, everyone's trying to help us, we're dependent, we need outside help. They've minimized us in so many ways. So for me, the map was a symbolic way of saying, we're not who you think we are, and that we're bigger than you think we are.” - Moky Makura, Executive Director, Africa No Filter

So, what’s the fuss about a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the use of the Equal Earth map, which represents Africa’s true size?

It’s true that General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding. But that doesn’t mean they are insignificant. They carry symbolic weight, reflecting the collective position of the international community and helping build momentum for change.

And this is significant: of the 165 UN member states that voted, 164 voted in favour of the resolution!

The next step? Turning this symbolic victory into tangible change by getting countries to adopt the correct map.

What are the people behind the #CorrectTheMap campaign planning next? And what can we expect to see over the next year?

🎧 Listen to Moky Makura unpack the significance of this resolution and what comes next in the latest episode of the #InspiredbyAfrica podcast.
