One of the mindset shifts we make when moving into a more connection-based approach to parenting is that we don’t “control” our children.
Teaching and guiding their behavior is just that: it’s “guidance.”
We help them make good decisions by helping them see that each choice they make comes with a consequence, whether they like the outcome or not.
As parents, we help them identify the natural consequences, and at times we may have to step in with logical consequences.
But what we don’t want to do is teach them “blind obedience,” by listening to what we say just because we said so.
When children are resistant to our directions, there’s a reason for it.
Instead of using fear and control to “get them to listen,” we take a step back and try to hear what our children are trying to tell us.
When we can lead with connection instead of control, our children are more likely to cooperate with us because they WANT to, not because they HAVE to.
