At the Jai Institute for Parenting, we believe the greatest gift we can give our children is our own personal growth. Because parents (AND kids) aren’t “broken.” They don’t need to be fixed. They need to be supported, resourced, and reminded of the wisdom they already hold. That’s why we train and certify Parenting Coaches around the world to walk alongside parents as they: ✨ Heal old patterns ✨ Learn to communicate with empathy ✨ Regulate their nervous systems ✨ Lead with both strength and softness Our work is rooted in attachment science, neuroscience, and Nonviolent Communication, and it’s changing the way families relate, one conversation at a time. When one parent transforms, the ripple reaches generations. We are here for the parents. We are here for the children. We are here for a better future. 💛 #dailyparenting #jaiinstituteforparenting #parentcoaching #parenthood #parentcoach #parenting #motherhoodrising #attachmentparenting #empoweredparenting #childdevelopment #motherhood by @jaiinstituteforparenting
Honesty can feel like a risk for a child, and what happens in the moments right after they take that risk teaches them whether it was worth it. When a child admits a mistake and the first thing they receive is a punishment, the lesson they learn isn’t “telling the truth is important.” Instead, they learn “telling the truth costs me something.” A “thank you for being honest” sounds kind, but the consequence that follows cancels it out, and kids are quick to notice that gap. Over time, the safest strategy starts to look like secrecy: cover it up, hope no one finds out, and avoid the parent who might hand down a penalty. That’s the opposite of what most of us want, especially as our kids grow into situations where the stakes of hiding things are much higher. So when your child confesses, try to respond with appreciation. Ask what happened, how they feel, and what they think the next step might be. It’s also appropriate to ask them what they learned from the situation and what they may do differently the next time. Parenting is not about handing out punishments after poor choices, it’s about ensuring our children are learning from their mistakes. Sometimes the natural consequence of a bad decision is enough for them to learn from it. They don’t need an extra consequence on top of that. Plus, we want our kids to continue to come to us with the challenges they face, not hide them from us. When their honesty is continuously met with support they’ll keep coming back to you for guidance. And that trust is what allows you to continue being involved in helping them through the bigger challenges ahead. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey. Getting your child’s attention is not the same as getting them to listen. You can demand eye contact, silence, and obedience with a firm tone, and your child will often go along with it. But that’s usually because they feel pressured, not because they agree or understand why. They may be standing right in front of you while their mind is somewhere else, just waiting for the lecture to end. Connection is what changes that. When your child feels seen and understood, they trust your words more. They’re more likely to want your guidance, because they know you’re on their side. Kids listen differently when they WANT to hear you, not when they HAVE to. Staying connected with your child is where you can have real influence in their lives. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey. It can be tough to get through parenting moments when our children behave in ways that trigger us. If your child’s big emotions feel overwhelming to you it’s most likely because growing up your own big emotions weren’t tolerated well by your parents. Your nervous system becomes even more dysregulated by your child’s dysregulation. Here’s what you can do… Pause for a few seconds. Take 3-5 slow but deep belly breaths. This is your way of communicating to your brain and body that you’re okay. There is no threat and no reason for your body to go into fight or flight mode. Then remind yourself that it’s okay for your child to feel whatever they’re feeling. They’re allowed to feel angry, frustrated, disappointed, etc. and that experience can be separate from yours. The quickest way to bring our children back down is to remain a safe and grounded person for them. We do this by responding intentionally and not from our own emotions. We validate what they’re feeling as a way to communicate, “I see you. I know this is hard for you right now and that’s okay. I’m here for you.” We let them feel and process their emotions so they’re not stuffing them away to try and please us. Over time they’ll learn that emotions are safe and that they will eventually pass. They’ll also learn the skills needed to bring their bodies back to feeling a sense of safety again. But in order to remain steady and anchored parents we must also learn the skills ourselves. This is exactly what our students learn through our program. They not only build skills to keep themselves more grounded in their parenting but they also learn how to support other families through it as well. 💫 Comment “INFO” to learn how our program can support you on your reparenting journey! #parentingcoach #consciousparenting #reparenting #breakingcycles #emotionalintelligence by @jaiinstituteforparenting
One of the mindset shifts we make when moving into a more connection-based approach to parenting is that we don’t “control” our children. Teaching and guiding their behavior is just that: it’s “guidance.” We help them make good decisions by helping them see that each choice they make comes with a consequence, whether they like the outcome or not. As parents, we help them identify the natural consequences, and at times we may have to step in with logical consequences. But what we don’t want to do is teach them “blind obedience,” by listening to what we say just because we said so. When children are resistant to our directions, there’s a reason for it. Instead of using fear and control to “get them to listen,” we take a step back and try to hear what our children are trying to tell us. When we can lead with connection instead of control, our children are more likely to cooperate with us because they WANT to, not because they HAVE to. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey. There’s a reason you react the way you do around your child’s big emotions. The way our caregivers responded to us when we were little has so much to do with how we respond to our children now. The good news? We have the ability to rewire our automatic responses. That’s exactly what so many of our graduates have learned and what our students are learning now. ❤️ Comment “INFO” to learn how our program could help you break cycles in your reparenting journey. #positiveparenting #consciousparenting #reparenting #breakingcycles #emotionalintelligence by @jaiinstituteforparenting
A parent’s tone communicates a lot before a single word is understood. When a voice gets loud and sharp, a child’s body reads it as a threat, so they tense up, shut down, or fight back, and their nervous system moves into protection mode instead of listening. A slow, steady voice sends the opposite message: nothing dangerous is happening, and this big feeling is something you can get through together. Children borrow calm from the adults around them, especially when their emotions are too big to manage alone, so your calm presence becomes the anchor they hold onto until they settle. When you meet a meltdown with patience instead of volume, your child learns that strong feelings don’t break your relationship and that the way back to connection is always open. Over time, that experience teaches them to find their own calm, because they have felt what it’s like to be guided there with care. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey. Every time your child reaches a new stage of development, it's brand new for you as a parent too. If you've never parented a child at this stage (or this particular child at this stage), it can feel like you're doing something wrong. But remember, all of these experiences are happening to both of you for the first time. It's okay to give yourself and your child some grace as you both navigate the challenges together. 💞 Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart (@dr.annlouise.lockhart) is one of the featured experts in our parenting coach certification program. Permissiveness and unconditional love can look alike from the outside, but they are not the same thing. Giving in to every demand or avoiding hard conversations to keep the peace may feel loving in the moment, but it doesn’t give children what they actually need. Kids benefit from guidance, steady boundaries, and the chance to learn skills they don’t have yet. A parent who offers those things is investing in who their child is becoming. At the same time, guidance should never make a child feel that their worth is up for debate. Positive parenting provides guidance and also shows children they are loved no matter how difficult their behavior is. A child can hear “no” and still feel completely secure in their parent’s love, because the limit is about the behavior, not about who they are as a person. When children experience both structure and unconditional acceptance, they learn they don’t have to become a certain person to feel loved. That is what gives them the confidence to become their best selves, because they know the love they receive from their parents is completely unconditional. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey. Children learn far more from what we do than from what we say. Even when your child seems to tune out the lecture or ignore the reminder, they’re still absorbing everything. How we treat other people... How we handle frustration... How we apologize... How we speak when we think no one is paying attention... That means the pressure to find the perfect phrase or deliver the ideal lesson is mostly misplaced. Words matter, but they only carry weight when they match what our kids see us living out every day. If we want a child to be kind, honest, or respectful, the most important way for us to teach them is to model those values in real everyday moments. There’s some relief in that, because you don’t have to be flawless in your parenting. Showing up consistently and authentically as a person will speak louder than any script. Over time, those daily choices you make will become the inner voice your child hears when they are in similar situations. ❤️ Follow the Jai Institute for more parenting tips and encouragement on your reparenting journey.
