When Matt Groening created The Simpsons in 1987, he borrowed several names from his own family.

His father was Homer, his mother was Margaret, and his sisters were Lisa and Maggie. His mother's maiden name was Wiggum, which also inspired the name of Springfield's police chief.

Bart was the exception. His name is an anagram of “brat.”

Margaret Groening was a former high school English teacher who married Homer Groening because, according to her obituary, he made her laugh the most. She passed away in 2013 at age 94. Interestingly, she never actually went by “Marge.”

The obituary shown is authentic and was published in The Oregonian on May 6, 2013.

It sounds like he kept some of the sweet aspects of their marriage in the show, that’s pretty cool.

Also when Marge’s maiden name is shown to be Bouvier, I think that’s a reference to Jacqueline Bouvier, later Keneddy, later Onassis(!) John F. Kennedy’s wife
