For years I photographed war and the human condition, always up close. War is raw, and my images were too, almost dirty.
In Svalbard I had to start again from scratch. Immense spaces, silence, a beauty that fascinated me and frightened me a little. I no longer knew how to look. I thought I wanted to clean up my photographs, but what I was really searching for was a cleansing of my own mind.
I rediscovered the pleasure of standing alone in front of a landscape, of waiting, of choosing. Photography has always been my therapy, and this time it taught me something new.
I don’t know where this path will lead. I only know I have to walk it. 🎬Leica SL3
