Woven plastic tarp - the one everyone knows, blue on one side and dark green on the other - has many benefits. It can be a shelter to protect humans, animals and plants. It can carry heavy loads too. And so much more of course. This simple weave is sturdy, multifunctional and strong, but it’s terrible once it starts to disintegrate; it falls apart, leaving tiny pieces of plastic everywhere. We must clean it up as much as we can if we see it lying around in nature.

For me, as a collector of trash, it’s a fascinating material too; I love the shape it takes after having lived and been left behind in nature or on the street; it resembles a piece of ancient textile, faded, torn, and interestingly shaped by the passage of time.

It will lie around in the room where I work for a while, and then I will slowly start to see how I can connect it to something else I have found.

Here are three woven variations, using pieces of tarp found in different locations in France that are part of my ongoing series ‘The Accidental Weave’.

Here, you wake to the sound of seagulls and the early call to prayer. I didn’t hear the end of the prayer; I fell asleep again.
But now I am sitting in the sun, back where I have been many times before.
I love being here, I love the sounds, the smells, the colors, and the people of Essaouira, Morocco.

To my right, I see the large plaza, with people walking toward the harbor, the beach, or the old Medina. Perhaps they are heading toward the wall that divides the plaza from the sea - I can see it from where I am seated - they’ll look out over sea.

Shadows are still long, casting diagonal shapes across the plaza.
Two women dressed in similar black outfits march like soldiers toward the beach, their arms swinging back and forth, their bodies upright and stiff. They are clearly not from here. Women don’t march like that here. They glide, moving with the space, not against it.

A faded marmalade cat that I saw last night sound asleep on a wicker chair on the second floor, is now actively watching the movement of something else on the plaza, not visible to my eye.

The sound of crashing waves and the wind that never stops fill my mind, creating a quiet restlessness inside me. It blows and blows and blows, carrying sand to cover the town’s history, (unfinished) structures, and perhaps some of its secrets, too. Memories of cities can be hidden, but their stories will remain.

From a distance, I hear the waves roar “You have no time to lose, life is catching up!”

Last piece on my Saori Loom.

I discovered this loom while living in NYC around 2019. Back then, I knew that I wanted to weave, but I didn’t have a clue how to go about it.

First, I found YouTube videos teaching me some basics here and there, and then I found a magical place in NYC called @loopoftheloom .

As I passed through the door, I was asked to take off my shoes, just like I do at home. It was peaceful and quiet here, yarn was arranged by color attached to the wall on wooden pins, and there were rows of Saori looms already warped, ready to start working. I felt at home, at peace, weaving ignited something inside me that seemed to connect with what I had been looking for, perhaps lost on the way.

Saori is about freedom of expression. I enjoyed its directness and simplicity, and soon after, I purchased a Saori loom of my own, a beautiful handmade wooden object with rounded edges, simple, with only two shafts. (Although I did transform it into four shafts giving me even more possibilities but is absolutely against the philosophy of Saori weaving!)

Little did I know (I guess we only learn by doing…) that this loom was made for people who are not 177 cm tall. My legs started to feel a bit tight in there, and my back too bent over.
Now my beloved Saori will go to someone who is a little bit shorter than I am and fits perfectly behind this loom. Moreover, she has taught me many things about weaving, and for that I am very grateful, Christine from @la_tisserie_parisienne .

And I am eagerly waiting for the arrival of another slightly bigger loom.

Working as a model is fast-paced, but in my work as an artist, I focus on slowing down and observing the often-overlooked details of daily life. Time plays an important role; I am fascinated and inspired by how marks of human touch and presence appear. I try to connect these - at times - almost invisible traces. We leave parts of ourselves behind wherever we go.

New issue: Vogue Nederland viert 40 jaar Inez & Vinoodh. Met dit iconische nummer brengen we een ode aan de imposante carrière van het wereldwijd vermaande, Nederlandse fotografenduo, dat werkelijk iedereen voor hun lens kreeg: van Lady Gaga en Kate Moss tot Barack Obama. ⁠

Exclusief voor Vogue nodigden Inez & Vinoodh 45 oude en nieuwe vrienden uit het vak uit. Ze brengen een hommage aan de Nederlanders met wie ze afgelopen 40 jaar samen hun stempel drukten op de internationale (mode)wereld. Eén van die gezichten is @SaskiadeBrauw. Het topmodel en multi-disciplinair kunstenaar was naast gezicht voor grote modecampagnes ook te zien in een videoclip van David Bowie en liet zich als een van de 7 covermodellen fotograferen door het duo. Saskia: ‘Toen ik net als model begon, stuurde mijn agent me naar mijn eerste casting ooit, in Parijs. Ik droeg een bruine ribbroek, dat paste helemaal niet tussen wat alle modellen aan hadden. Already so much has been written about @h.a’s last show for @tomford; many praising it for its beauty, sexiness, and seductiveness. This may all be true, but to me, that’s not the only thing that defined Wednesday night’s show. It’s also very personal. I have walked for Haider for many years, I stopped counting.

Ever since I can remember, it’s his warm hands that pleat, push, and fold around my body to shape a garment until it’s just right. Somehow, not many others can pleat and fold like him; he knows cloth and the body like no one else. He will look at you, never judgmental but always curious and searching.

There are always hidden layers for the wearer to enjoy; it’s the green that appears from inside the skirt when you fold your leg, or a blue when your coat hangs loosely around your shoulders, or the softness of the fabric enveloping your torso. To me, it seems as if the outside and inside are equally important, to feel good outside means feeling cared for inside. His clothes are so much more than just the surface.

As I left the runway and headed down the stairs, I watched the rest of the show on a screen, and suddenly I understood what I was seeing. We were all part of a city in flux. People moving around as if the world around them had disappeared, like in a dream. All the bus stops, cars, shops, dirt on the ground—no neon lights, just bodies in space.

And when you just see humans, stripped of their surroundings, the only thing that can surface are emotions, through gestures and the way they wear a garment. The latest @tomford show, as one of my agents put it, was about becoming a piece in Haider’s marvelous puzzle; it is about the story that he wants to tell, more than just clothes.
