A sentence can stay with you for years.

Something you read in a book. Something someone said when you needed encouragement. Something you wrote before you realized how much you needed to say it.

Words have that kind of power. They shape how we see others—and what we believe is possible for ourselves.

On National Author’s Day, I’m reflecting on my own journey writing I.C.U.: The Comprehensive Guide to Breathing Life Back Into Your Personal Brand.

So much of my work centers on how others see us. But the words we use to describe ourselves matter, too. “I’m just…” “It’s too late…” “Who am I to…?” We can repeat those sentences so often that we begin to live within them.

Writing gives us an opportunity to question those stories. Reading gives us the chance to discover another perspective.

That’s one of the privileges of being an author: your words may reach someone you’ll never meet and help them see themselves a little differently.
