The stage lights of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre bathed a lone figure in silver luminescence as she performed the fluttering, agonizing death throes of Camille Saint-Saëns’ "The Dying Swan." With an arched back of astonishing flexibility and arms that seemed to ripple like liquid silk, Maya Plisetskaya brought thousands of spectators—including visiting foreign presidents, monarchs, and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev—to their feet in thunderous ovation. Across the globe, her face adorned Soviet cultural posters, state stamps, and diplomatic programs as the supreme living testament to the refinement and socialist perfection of the USSR. Yet deep within the archives of the Lubyanka, the personnel file of the Soviet Union’s prima ballerina assoluta was stamped with the most dangerous classification in totalitarian society: the untrustworthy child of an "enemy of the people." The destruction of Maya’s childhood had been orchestrated with the clinical efficiency of the Great Terror. Born in 1925 into a prominent Jewish artistic and intellectual family, she spent her earliest years between Moscow and the Arctic coal-mining outpost of Barentsburg on Spitsbergen, where her father, Mikhail Plisetsky, served as consul general and director of the state mining trust Arktikugol. Respected, charismatic, and intensely dedicated to his work, Mikhail was nonetheless targeted in the paranoid dragnet of 1937. On April 30, NKVD agents broke into the family’s Moscow apartment and dragged him away into the night. Mikhail was subjected to secret interrogation, convicted on fabricated charges of counter-revolutionary sabotage, and shot by a firing squad in January 1938, his body tossed into an unmarked mass grave at the Kommunarka execution range. For more than half a century, the Soviet government concealed his murder from his family, claiming he had died of illness in an unspecified remote camp. The terror did not stop with the father. In March 1938, secret police agents entered the Bolshoi Theatre during a performance and arrested Maya’s mother, Rachel Messerer, a popular silent film actress. Clutching her seven-month-old infant son Azari to her chest, Rachel was thr
Xu Chenghong, grew up with almost no one. His father died when he was about 3. Two years later, his mother remarried and left. When he was 7, the grandmother who was raising him and his older brother passed away too. He dropped out of middle school and worked construction and delivery jobs, saving up for the day he could marry the woman he loved. When that day finally got close, the 24-year-old ran into a heartbreaking problem. He had almost no family to invite. While planning, the couple realized they could barely fill three tables. So he posted online, inviting strangers to come celebrate with him. He was hoping for maybe 10 or 20 people so it wouldn’t feel like a lonely affair. The internet showed up. Thousands of people reportedly traveled from across the country to be there. And they didn’t come empty-handed. Guests reportedly brought pigs, live ducks, two cows, a refrigerator, cooking equipment, and 9,999 roses. Shanghai Daily reported that 1.2 tons of apples arrived, along with a whole pig delivered overnight. Feeding everyone became its own operation. According to Shanghai Daily, about 150 chefs came in to cook. Organizers had to scrap the plan for a sit-down meal and switch to a buffet. A wedding planner traveled in from Hunan Province to help set up the venue. Villagers reportedly installed new streetlights along the roads, China Mobile brought in extra 5G equipment, and local officials stepped in to manage parking, traffic, and lines. The big day was Saturday, October 31.
She won an Olympic silver medal, but the internet fell in love with her for a completely different reason: photos of her doing gymnastics on giant wheels of parmesan cheese. Giorgia Villa was 21 years old when she helped Italy win the silver medal in the women's gymnastics team final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was Italy's first team medal in the event since 1928, and Villa contributed a key score on the uneven bars. But that is not why the internet fell in love with her. After her medal win, fans rediscovered a series of photos from 2021. In them, Villa is posing with massive wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano. She does the splits over four wheels of cheese. She does a handstand next to one. She hugs a giant wedge like it is her best friend. In one photo, she is carving into a hunk of parmesan on what appears to be a balance beam. The photos were part of a real sponsorship deal. Villa became an ambassador for Parmigiano Reggiano in April 2021, and she spoke about how much she loved the product, calling it a symbol of Italian culture. The cheese consortium has sponsored other Italian athletes, including tennis player Jannik Sinner. #giorgiavilla #parmesancheese #olympics
Zaheeda! A face that deserved a much longer innings in Hindi cinema. With those large, expressive eyes, delicate features and understated elegance, she had a beauty that didn’t need loud packaging. Remember her in Anokhi Raat, Prem Pujari and Gambler? She shared screen space with Dev Anand in the last two. And what a filmi family! Her father was producer Akhtar Hussain, son of filmmaker Jaddanbai. Nargis was her aunt and actor Anwar Hussain her uncle. Cinema was practically the family business! Here’s a delicious little Dev Anand anecdote: Zaheeda knitted him a sweater, and he actually wore it in Jewel Thief. Now that’s a heroine leaving a personal touch! She eventually married Kesri Nandan Sahay, had two sons and stepped away from films. A brief career, but certainly a face worth remembering.
🚨| 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍: Barcelona have CLOSED THE GRADA D’ANIMACIÓ stand at the Spotify Camp Nou for this weekend against Alavés. The club cited inappropriate behaviour that could lead to fines or even stadium closure as the reason. The decision follows a series of disciplinary cases involving the club and some members, including incidents from El Clásico. Barça hope to reopen the section against Aston Villa if an agreement is reached with the supporter groups. — @mundodeportivo 🥇
