During a recent appearance on “The Big Tigger Morning Show,” the actress addressed backlash over her character’s struggles with pain pill addiction. ICYMI: Some viewers have made it clear they’re not happy seeing Jax, a successful and ambitious Black woman, seemingly take such a dark turn. However, Emayatzy offered a different POV, arguing that Jax’s struggles don’t erase her accomplishments or diminish who she is as a woman. She also challenged fans bothered by Jax’s journey to take a look in the mirror. As she put it, “There’s something there that’s uncomfortable… because we don’t like to see someone who has it together as much as this woman does, possibly go down this road.”

That is such a ridiculous thing to say. People need to understand that addiction hits everyone no matter how strong you are, no matter how rich you are, no matter how many resources you have, no matter what race you are or what gender you are. And since a lot of opiate addiction usually stems from legitimate pain this is a perfect storyline and I love that they’re keeping it 100 and showing the gritty dirty side of it. When someone is addicted to opiates they will do anything to get that next fix and I love how far they’re willing to take it. This is what needs to be shown to addiction in realities of what it looks like.

I love the humanity that her character shows. Jax is dynamic and doesn’t fit in a box. I love how imperfect she is. Black women deserve spaces where they can experience highs AND lows, wins AND losses.. I look forward to seeing how things pan out this season and prayerfully many seasons after. Emayatzy is acting her ass off 🔥🔥🔥.
