OpenAI CEO Sam Altman gave the internet a little surprise after changing his X display name to “Ram Altman” on November 4, 2026. The name change came after criticism of his comments about the global shortage of computer memory. During an appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman argued that it was inefficient for large amounts of the world's limited DRAM supply to sit inside personal computers while being used only around 5% of the time. He suggested that cloud data centres could make more efficient use of these resources by sharing computing capacity across multiple users. The remark sparked a wave of memes, with users poking fun at the idea that consumers should have less RAM in their own computers while AI companies continue expanding massive data centres. One user suggested that Altman rename his X account to “Ram Altman”, and he responded with “Ok yeah” before making the change. He later clarified that he wants people to have as much memory as they want in their computers and argued that the world needs to increase memory production. The temporary name change turned a serious debate about AI infrastructure and consumer hardware into one of the internet's latest tech memes.
