Whales and other marine mammals rely on sound to communicate, find food and get around. Noise from ships can get in the way of that.

Most of it comes from three places: the propeller, the hull and the machinery. Even the shape of the bow plays a part, because it changes how water flows around the ship.

The @imo_hq has guidelines and an action plan to help shipowners and designers build quieter ships. And many of the changes that cut noise also cut energy use, so the ship gets more efficient as well as quieter.

Thinking about underwater noise at the design stage is still relatively new. It’s a good sign that it’s now part of the conversation from the start.

This is a great commitment and we applaud it. However what about shipstrikes for whales. Are there any developments to warn whales in particular about ships so they don't become victims of shipstrikes @oceancare @oceancare.international
