The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN agency that leads international efforts to promote safer shipping on cleaner oceans.

POSTS STORIES REELS

Whales and other marine mammals rely on sound to communicate, find food and get around. Noise from ships can get in the way of that.

Most of it comes from three places: the propeller, the hull and the machinery. Even the shape of the bow plays a part, because it changes how water flows around the ship.

The @imo_hq has guidelines and an action plan to help shipowners and designers build quieter ships. And many of the changes that cut noise also cut energy use, so the ship gets more efficient as well as quieter.

Thinking about underwater noise at the design stage is still relatively new. It’s a good sign that it’s now part of the conversation from the start.

Our oceans are home to some of the most extraordinary creatures 🐋. Protecting them is a serious responsibility. For shipping, that means finding practical ways to reduce our impact on whales and the marine environment.

From quieter ships and smarter voyage planning to better whale detection and new digital tools, innovation and action are helping make a difference. The new digital WSC Whale Chart is an important part of this work, making global whale protection measures more accessible to the maritime community. by @imo_hq

The International Maritime Organization has adopted new guidance aimed at ensuring marine geoengineering research avoids unacceptable impacts, amid growing interest in climate change mitigation technologies.

Marine geoengineering involves methods to increase the ocean’s capacity to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or store carbon for long periods. However, their potential impacts on marine ecosystems are not yet fully understood.

Meeting at IMO Headquarters in London, Parties to the 1972 Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter (London Convention) and 1996 Protocol to the Convention (London Protocol), adopted a resolution establishing assessment frameworks for ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement and ocean sinking biomass.

The frameworks will help governments determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether proposed activities constitute legitimate scientific research and whether they can proceed without unacceptable risks to the marine environment.

Welcoming the achievement, IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez said:

“At a time when marine geoengineering is attracting increasing scientific, commercial and public attention, they provide regulators and researchers with rigorous and transparent tools for assessing proposed activities and protecting the marine environment.”

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has expressed his condolences and reiterated his tireless call on the international community to do more to protect seafarers, following reports of the deaths of five crew members during an operation to free the hijacked vessel HONOUR 25 in the Gulf of Aden region.

The HONOUR 25 was one of three vessels released this week, along with the SEAMULL (SIBU 1) and EUREKA, which were held captive by pirates and armed robbers since they were seized between April and August 2026:

Secretary-General Dominguez said:

“It is troubling to have to make these statements so often, and even more difficult to convey in words how distressing it is continuously hear that seafarers are losing their lives simply for doing their jobs.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of five seafarers during the rescue of the HONOUR 25 on 29 September, in Somali waters. I offer my heartfelt condolences to their families, friends and fellow crew members.

Several seafarers were also seriously injured. I will keep urging all those responsible for their care and welfare to ensure they receive the treatment and support they need as they recover from this traumatic ordeal.“

⚓️ The second and third days of the @imo_hq IMO Women in Maritime Association (WIMA) Asia Regional Workshop took us from understanding the barriers to shaping a way forward.

🗺️ We explored power mapping, how to build support and influence change, and used Forum Theatre to work through practical scenarios.

🌏 I was especially grateful to attend alongside Nurul Fitrah and Amanda Lim from MPA @maritime_sg . In a global industry like maritime, Singapore’s regulatory work calls for diplomacy and a deep understanding of commercial and legal realities. Their work is a real inspiration.

🇸🇬 I was proud of the Critical Path of Advocacy Roadmap we formulated on Day 3. Building on the foundations of #MaritimeSG—including SMF, @maritimeonesg scholarships and internships, the Maritime Youth Ambassadors Programme, SSA YEG and industry engagement—we brainstormed ways to increase women’s leadership in maritime, especially in private enterprise. The opportunity now is to connect these efforts and create more pathways for women to lead.

🙏 Thank you, Mariana Noceti and Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, for the meaningful invitation.

💙 After the workshop, I joined the @wista_singapore AGM. Membership and visibility continue to grow thanks to the ExCo. My appreciation to Chair Yukie Teo, Vice-Chair Prantika Sengupta, and the Exco for their work and commitment.

I’m honoured to have been renewed as a WISTA Singapore Ambassador through 2027. Looking forward to the WISTA International AGM in Kuala Lumpur and meeting our #WISTASistas from around the world. Huge kudos to the planning committee!

🤝 Platforms like WIMA and WISTA bring maritime administrations and industry together to advance gender parity, raise awareness of maritime careers, increase women’s visibility, and connect women with mentors, advocates and opportunities.

At #UNGA81, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez had a message for world leaders on the Strait of Hormuz: "Do not use shipping as collateral in geopolitical conflicts, where innocent seafarers do not have a voice and when everyone else in the world will be negatively affected". by @imo_hq

🌊🌅🚢 #WorldMaritimeDay 2026: From Policy to Practice - Powering Maritime Excellence

Global regulations will deliver safer, more resilient shipping when they are implemented worldwide.

The international maritime community marks World Maritime Day on 24 September as shipping faces the direct impacts of wider geopolitical tensions and conflict.

Merchant ships have been attacked in multiple conflict zones – from the Strait of Hormuz to the Black Sea and Sea of Azov – resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent seafarers, and the disruption of global trade and critical supply chains.

Against this backdrop, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is highlighting the importance of upholding and implementing the international regulatory framework that keeps shipping safe, secure and efficient, while protecting the people who work at sea.
